New to me 87 jimmy soon to be 2wd

I recently purchased a 87 jimmy that's 4wd, I'm going to convert it to 2wd and static drop as much as possible. Right now there's no motor, trans, or transfer case. I'm gonna put my bbc in it.

Re: New to me 87 jimmy soon to be 2wd

I had a 77 2wd blazer before I had my 70. Looks like a great place to start.

Good luck, Rg

Well as soon as it warms up a little bit I plan to get going. I got the bumpers off and out of the way already but still have a lot of work to do. I will take pics along the way and post em up.

I know the LS motors put up big numbers but it'll be nice to see a big block build.

Yea I kept my bbc from my 72 truck so I'm gonna use it. I love the way it runs and sounds plus gas is cheaper again so why not. Now if it would just warm up some.

Re: New to me 87 jimmy soon to be 2wd

plan to just swap an A-arm crossmember in? Not sure how this goes down. Maybe a trans crossmember switch too? I see 2wd to 4wd all the time, some even dive into links.

Re: New to me 87 jimmy soon to be 2wd

Not sure which route I'll go yet. I may just clip the entire front frame and put a 2wd section to keep from having to fight all those rivets. Or I may try to bolt a member in and the crossmember who knows I'll see when I get all my parts gathered up and able to start. I've already got a reared and the brackets to flip it and stick it in. I know it'll take some time and effort but will be worth it down the road. I've yet to had a cruiser vehicle my whole family could get in and got to a local show or cruise in. I can't wait.

Re: New to me 87 jimmy soon to be 2wd

Yeah when i did my 4w-2w conversion i cut the entire front frame from the fireewall gorward on a 81 c10(did this to have reference points)I did the "rivets" method then bolted it all up with grade 8 bolts to my 86 that I also modded into a full convert able using a 74 for the donor.it took about 4 hours to get it all measured out and bolted up,not hard at all.good luck and welcome to the. Club!

My mom used to have a two-tone blue with the 6.2 diesel in it. I wonder how many of those 6.2's are still kicking around.

Can't wait to see your progress.

Re: New to me 87 jimmy soon to be 2wd

Great progress! Me think the state your k5 is currently in it would be a lot easier to remove the front doghouse, and topper and separate the body from frame, then you could really get it on with the 2wd conversion, blast frame, as well as going all your suspension mods, and rear end?

Re: New to me 87 jimmy soon to be 2wd

I had though about that but the frame is pretty clean so I think once I get everything back on it I'll just black it from there. I'll probably do all the nasty work to the front before I put it on the frame. Thanks for idea though.

Re: New to me 87 jimmy soon to be 2wd

Well I sold my project 72 c10 so there's a little more money in the budget now for the blazer. I do have a question though that I'd appreciate some feedback, I'm trying to decide what kind of grill to use a full phantom, billet inserts, or a 89-91 jimmy grill. I like the looks of all 3 just would like some input of what others like.

The factory GMC grill would be hard to beat.

Yes it would but my grill is broke in the center and I haven't seen billet pieces for a 87 gmc grill.

Re: New to me 87 jimmy soon to be 2wd

I got lucky with this one. It's been stripped of the inside but it was all still in the back. The worse things I don't have are the brake booster and a steering column and a wiring harness but the parts truck I'm trying to buy has all those things plus a few extra items I need. Not bad for 650 bucks in my opinion.

Does anyone know where to get a new manual window regulator and window
crank for a jimmy, my power motor is gone and the power regulator appears to be damaged.

Rockauto.com has the regulators, not sure about the glass.
