88-98 CK1500 10 bolt Rear Disc Conversion

Hi,
I have a 1989 K1500, 8.5in corp 10 bolt, from factory the brakes were garbage and I have since put the 2500 front calipers on up front, hydroboost, and years ago a rear disc conversion- this kit takes 1988 light duty front rotors and the D154 GM caliper, cheap and from many years of cars, currently using 1994 S10 calipers. I never could get Eldorado calipers to work properly so I have a transfer case mounted driveline safety brake. Anyway, from day one the pass side wasn't square, I suppose since the bracket is a two piece welded unit- the welding may have warped it- I don't know, I do know that the pads wear into wedges- sure I could take a sledge to it.....
So I've been looking around and have seen some high dollar kits and ran across John here and his kits look to be high quality, BUT he only makes them for 67-87 GM trucks, as per his email below I'm looking for some interest in a reasonably price kit- I've also been looking at Wilwood D154 replacements and dual piston calipers, aluminum and SS pistons- not a bad price too, but I have in mind 98-04 S10 front dual piston caliper, should be easy to find cheap and powerful, see what he comes up with. At this time, any caliper with a integral parking brake would probably too light for a truck app.

I would be willing to develop something for the '88-'98 differentials if there was enough solid interest. However I would not be able to do anything on this for about 6 weeks. I have just entirely too much work right now. If I could get 4 or 5 commitments on rear disc brake brackets that would be sufficient for me to put the time into development.

I have a 91 chevy with a 10 bolt rear and have been thinking about rear discs brakes for a while,So I am interested to see what he could come up with !!! I am sure there is more interest too !!!

Mr Rich posted this pic of his rear brake on his stock '89 1500 Tahoe. Its a Factory option.

It appears to have an internal drum parking brake in the hat of the disc rotor.

This could be the easy way to get rear disc brakes, its all bolt on. Call some wrecking yards and get everything from the P/B cables to the caliper.

I guess nobody ticked that particular box around here, that style of chev is rare enough at the yards (here) and I've never seen a stock rear disk except on the 99+.

Do you have a link to a thread on Mr Rich's Tahoe? Not to argue, but that just doesn't look like a factory rear disc I am used to seeing.

Looking again at Mr Rich's rear brake does make me wonder if its stock.

Ha, I just looked at his sig. and its a Stillen Rear disc conversion kit.

BTW It's a '89 K1500 extended cab not a Tahoe.

I have a functioning disk conversion:
- stock master cyl
- combi valve off 2000 chev picku
- hydroboost
-- my problem is a defective bracket that is not true causing pad wear issues
-- using D154 callipers- while cheap, I think there are better oe callipers out there now

I'm baa-a-ck. While the Stillen kit is very expensive, it is the best engineered disk brake conversion kit out there. There are other kits that are very good, but you give up the emergency brake, for example. I tried the SS kit and decided not to use it and sold it on E-bay a while back. The Baer kit is NOT bolt-on and requires machining of the axles. It would be nice to have off-the-shelf factory parts WITH an emergency brake to bolt on to the older axles, but it doesn't seem those parts exist.
Modifying the spring pads and shock mounts on a late model diff. might be the best solution to get off-the-shelf factory parts on a disk brake rear diff. to fit a classic Chev. truck/ Sub/ Tahoe.

Yeah- if I knew then what I know now.....
I would have purchased the '99 up diff and installed that, my issue now is that I have a TruTrac installed and also when I was having it installed with gears (for the 3rd time- just pay for the expertise up front instead of cheaping out) the installer commented that the later model diff's weren't as stiff and tended to sag- he would put a laser end to end and press it straight.

///// I might be interested in a rear dics set up for my 90 Z71, Ive been wanting to change over for some time ,( pulling capabilities)because of the brake fade,but the parts to convert are at a cost beyond budget, TSM.or was it TMS, I believe there out of Colorado, was the close's price match when I was looking ,but it was still to expensive , so shoot me a price , and component configuration when you get around to it, 10 bolt 6 bolt corporation,(not the HD44!!)

Yes, I have been trying to keep up on the thread you started. It will still be a few weeks before I can do much on this, but the wheels are turning. I am going to try and incorporate an e-brake into this assembly as well as a more modern caliper as opposed to the D154.

Not much really....still working 70-80 hrs a week. I've got an idea for the e-brake. I'm hoping for some time in about another week.

I am also interested in these. I spent alot of time trying to figure out a way to make this work with all stock parts but couldn't find any '94 Impala SS brackets. But I did figure out that you could use the Impala SS rotors and Camaro calipers. The Camaro calipers are used because they actually use the main pads for ebrake instead of an internal drum like the Impala. You can find as cheap of calipers or as good of calipers as you want for the camaro as well. Same goes for the pads. Just my $.02 but very interested in these brackets. (93 gmc 2wd 5 lug 10 bolt)
