How do they know?

It's after midnight. I'm working in my office. I have a big jar of animal crackers on my desk and I think I'd like to have one. As soon as the thought crosses my mind my little Havanese dog runs in and starts begging. I never even touched the jar. I just thought about it. But he knew.

Whenever I leave the house my German Shepherd flips out. He doesn't want me to go. I'll try to sneak out but he'll always lay down in front of the door. And he won't move. Way before I even make any attempt to open the door. He knows.

They know what you're going to do before you do it.

I don't get it. Sixth sense?

This is my Havanese dog in case you've never heard of them. (I never had) My wife got him.

Re: How do they know?

We could never bring any large bags or suitcases downstairs without my husky/golden mix freaking out. We'd have put her in the back yard and put the luggage on the porch. The other dog never cared.

I can't get food out of the pantry without that same dog sitting by the door before I can turn around. She hears the door and comes running. She always knows that specific door sound.

I can't say they predict stuff though. I don't think mine are as smart.

My childhood Lab knew what a rifle or shotgun was by sight. He'd run at the sight of one. No, I never shot my dogs, I think he witnessed a few things during hunting season though.

Thanks.

Buffalo Soldier is probably my favorite Marley tune.
And Bear Bear does look like a Dreadlock Rasta in that pic.

His real name is Bear. We call him Bear Bear because you always have to call him twice.

Back a couple of years ago I ran a lot and had an iPod that had Buffalo Soldiers on it. Great song to run with. I had a bunch of Gary Hoey tunes on it also.

Re: How do they know?

Dogs have much more highly developed senses than humans. They just don't speak our language. But they sure can communicate. They pick up on movements and sounds. We don't notice a lot of our mannerisms until someone else points them out. Like clearing your throat before addressing someone with a serious matter or a slight grunt as we get up out of a chair. We might do it differently depending on what we are about to do

My daughter's little poodle had to be put down last week. He was a sharp little cuss. He was at least 16 years old. She used to leave him with me when she'd go away for the weekend or on vacations, etc. He loved it here. He got nice and dirty being a dog, loving every minute of it. I called him hillbilly pedigree. When she got him as a pup she thought about naming him Bear or something along those lines because he looked like a baby bear. I came up with the name Cubby and it stuck. i'm going to miss my little buddy

SpecialK,
They sure steal a place in your heart don't they? My daughter just had to have a dog about four years ago. She and her mom picked out a Morkie, Maltese/Yorkie mix.

Well, flash forward four years and guess who's dog she is now? She is laying at my feet under my desk as I type this. Told my daughter she had turned me into one of those guys heading to the vet with a nine lb dog sitting in his lap.
She hears the pantry door open and the lid on her treat jar from the furthest point in the house.

Here she is in one of her favorite poses.

Decades ago I adopted a lab mix from some friends who couldn't keep her anymore. She would go crazy when you got a gun out, she wanted to GO HUNTING!

Our current surviving dog is some sort of chewawa mix that apparently somebody dumped out here. I found her the day after thanksgiving 2008 as a very tiny little starved frozen puppy out on my shooting range. I tucked her down in the top of my bib overalls and brought her in the house to warm up. We asked all around but nobody would claim her. Never had a little dog like that but she got along so well with our big doofus of a golden retriever that we kept her. She has trouble getting up on the couch or bed sometimes now.

You don't pick them...They pick you.

My German Shepherd was supposed to be my dog. But he had other ideas. He's mama's boy. When she's around I don't exist.

Re: How do they know?

Don't feel bad, my dogs did me the same.

I got little Oreo a few months after I started dating my future wife. We dated in college for about a year before she had to go on to grad school in Georgia for 4 more years.

I got Nabisco about 2 years later. Both my girls lived with me in SC. I fed them, walked them, bathed them, I lived in a crappy apartment so I let them sleep on my bed (they're only allowed downstairs now). As soon as Jena was around... they forgot about me. The only time they care is when I have food or Ice cubes. Oreo is currently 16 and Nabisco will be 15 in a couple months.

Re: How do they know?

Y'all are funny. My dogs don't come when I get the treats out, they know their treat schedule. They come and tell me if I'm a couple minutes late. Mrs PD overfeeds if I don't intervene. She thinks if she wants food she's hungry and so they must be hungry. She's been gone a week and they've all lost about a 1/2 pound. That may not seem like much but they only weigh 7-12 pounds. I have 4 Yorkies and two Chinese Crested/Poodle crosses. They're all about my feet and under them if I stand up but Mrs. will be home tomorrow and I'll get dumped like a bad relationship. Kind of Like Redneck, I'm their whole world until she shows up.

Re: How do they know?

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge

When a dog dies that has especially close to someone here , that dog goes to Rainbow bridge. there are meadows and hill for all our special friends so they can run and play together ,There is plenty of food, water and sunshine. And our friends are warm and comfortable

All the dogs who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who are hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The dogs are happy and content, except for one small thing ; they each miss someone very special to them who had been left behind

They all run and play together ,but the day comes when One suddenly stops and looks in to the distance. His bright eyes are intent. his eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend meet, you cling together in a joyous reunion, never to be parted again. the happy kisses rain upon your face , your hands again caress his beloved head, and you look once more in to the trusting eyes of your dog so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart..

Author is unknown but this poem hangs in my home, and over the years I have had many many dogs , I obedience trained , conformation Showed , bred , hunt trained and just plan old companion ship, but every time I lose one of my dogs I looked to this poem that hangs on my wall next to my fireplace where they all lay on the coldest of night
