Best DIY bedliner?

i know not a lot of guys here are big on bedliners, but the bed i have, i have no option of replacing, and its going to take a ton of work to get it back to looking normal..

i have quite a bit of rust pocking in the bed, and plan on doing a decent strip of the bed on the rusty areas, but i know its not gonna be perfect and doesnt have to be perfect either

so what does everyone like for DIY roll on bed liners?? one that will hide the most dings and will actually adhere to itself and wont just peel up later, or crack if an area or two has a bad bond?

Edit : i took another look and checked some review sites, it looks like "prep" is the key to any bedliner really, so i may be doing quite a bit of of work on the bed to make it so the liner will stick, but still need a good suggestion for the liner to use. so far im leaning towards herculiner, but ive seen a couple other good ones around my area... gator guard or something like that is one, but havent read much on it.

Re: Best DIY bedliner?

I'm going to end up using bed liner as an undercoating. This one doesn't look too bad but, not experience with it. http://www.alsliner.com/

Re: Best DIY bedliner?

NONE of the doit your self bed liners will last. only the professionally sprayed will be there for ever. The do it yourself are EASILY peeled and scratched if you use your bed. I do not think you will be satisfied.

Re: Best DIY bedliner?

Would you be able to sandblast the bed before you put the liner in? That would insure all the rust is gone, and you will have a better chance of the off the shelf liner lasting. Don't know how much these kits cost, but I got a quote from Line-x to do my bed for $450, and that should last forever.

Re: Best DIY bedliner?

those do it youself bed liners dont bond well no matter how you prep. they are not designed to last as long as line-x or rhino. if they did it would put those companies out of business. some of those kits give you a red scotch bright you prep with. We've tried everything. 36 grit roloc, 80 grit.and preped the way the instructions say. They will do alright on places that dont get scrapped. Never had a problem with them under a cab, wheel wells ect.. don't get me wrong we've scrapped agood liner too. shock bracket on a rear end. just a lot harder to do.

Re: Best DIY bedliner?

I did a ton of research when looking to do my bed floor. After days of reading, I found the best DIY liner was called Raptor. It is a two part system, which you mix in a hardener and it comes with its own spray gun. You can roll it on but it is highly recommended to spray it on. I decided to try it out and it worked great. It covered the pock marks and blended in the small dings. I did a little body work to get the larger dents out. Prep is the biggest key. I used a wire wheel in my grinder and spent many hours getting the old paint and rust off. I wiped everything down with real automotive grade wax and greese remover. Sprayed it on per instructions and it worked great. I haven't actually got the bed back together so I can't comment on durability yet but based on everything I read, it should be very good.

Here's some pics.

That looks great!
I recently used Herculiner in my truck bed and was very pleasantly surprised at how well it looks, however I don't think it'll last with serious useage. My trucks don't get used as trucks much anymore so it was right for me.

Re: Best DIY bedliner?

well, i have no use for the bed of the truck, and mostly its for a cosmetic look to help hide dings and keep the surface from getting any worse in the weather here, so the herculiner may be an ok alternative for a quickie application after the strip and prepping. ill try to post some pics after i get done of how much prep work i do.

thanks guys

heres the final product of what i bought, went with herculiner and im also satisfied with the outcome, we will see how it holds up, but i never do any real serious hauling so the back of my truck will be fine

Re: Best DIY bedliner?

I owned a bedliner business for a while and prep is the key. Also you do not want to spray the material over bare metal. It will bubble from underneath. If you have bare metal in a large area you need to use a good primer and then sand the shine off of it.

Re: Best DIY bedliner?

I used herculiner about 5 years ago. It was on a "88 truck that still had paint on it. I preped and applied per instructions. It is mostly gone where the sun hits it. Looks good under the toolbox. I would not use it again on anything that sits outside. I have been lookin at Upol Raptor. http://www.u-pol.com/documents/datas...RLB-TDS-US.pdf

And spraying is much better than rolling...

Re: Best DIY bedliner?

I undercoated my cab and fenders with raptor. Did the box too. Some spots have scratched through, but overall it is holding up fairly well.

Re: Best DIY bedliner?

I used the POR 15 bed liner kit. Sanded everything to bare metal and used the regular POR 15 first then top coated with the bed liner material. Comes with a spray gun for application.
