Wait for it ... Wait for it ...Doh !

I buy a Powerball every week and checking my numbers this week I almost hit a decent one but then ...

Powerball Numbers -03 06 09 17 56 25
My numbers - 06 09 17 25 55 25

If I had the 56 instead of my 55 it would have been $150,000.00

one number off still got me $300.00 But.... Doh!

I'd be Grumpier ! When you retire it's not what you did in the last few years ,it's what you did 30 years ago that made the difference .

I still think 55 is a better number than 56. $300 paid you back for about 1/2 the year's tickets. That ain't bad. You got so close, now your odds are farther away

Same here. I might buy a couple when it gets to gigantic numbers but I probably don't spend more than $5-10/yr.

Congrats on the $300! 150K would have been a lot nicer though

My wife buys the tickets. If she wins, she will have absolutely no need for me anymore.

Maybe I need to check on the Viagra.

Re: Wait for it ... Wait for it ...Doh !

I used to go out with a girl whose mother did win the lottery, got all 5 numbers right minus the "powerball" but didn't realize she had won 2 million dollars and THREW THE TICKET INTO THE TRASH.

Ignorance may be bliss but it can also be very expensive.

Lottery winners typically go bankrupt within 5 years and end up millions in debt. Kidnapping, murder are major risks. WV's largest lotto winner was already a millionaire and winning caused him nothing but problems, including the drug overdose/murder of his granddaughter. I would fear my family members being kidnapped for ransom and family disputes over money. I would certainly have to move and my temptations for purchases would be intense.

My boss at my old job actually got to meet him. It was about a year after his granddaughter had died. We were building a Wal-Mart adjacent to some land he owned and needed him to sign for some utility easement or something. I think he was trying to buy a helicopter company at that time? My boss had all sorts of wild stories he told him.

I wouldn't doubt it! The local news reported some items on him that although normal for many people was on steroids with that guy.

Now he did set up a website by 2003 with application included to allow people to petition him for funding for their wishes and life dreams. My aunt had me print one out for her in her bid for cash. He clearly had a good heart.

Re: Wait for it ... Wait for it ...Doh !

I completely forgot... I went to High School with a family that won 17 million in the NYS lottery back in the early 90's.

They definitely lived a good life. All the kids drove new SUV's to school, they had a huge house, all the kids went to college. They were good people. Taxes and lifestyle caught up with them, I think their money lasted over 20-25 years, but my parents told me that they sold their big house and moved into a smaller one and went back to work a few years back. Their kids were good kids too, one was in my grade. You wouldn't know they were millionaires unless they told you.

Re: Wait for it ... Wait for it ...Doh !

Winning 17 million and going broke is hard for me to grasp.

A 17 million dollar win after taxes would net you around 8 million. 8 million invested wisely would net an $800,000/year income.

The only way to spend $800,000/year is to simply piss it away.

All I know is Grumpy was lucky he didn't win that lottery. It is clear to me it would have ruined his life.

Re: Wait for it ... Wait for it ...Doh !

Yea, I kinda don't think I'd really want to win a "big one" either. BUT, 150-200K after taxes would be fantastic, wouldn't even tell anyone I won. I'd take 65K to pay off the house, build my shop for another 30K and maybe even take the wife to Europe or something for a week. I'd put the last 75-100K away and hopefully retire a little earlier. With the house paid for I can buy stupid stuff, like more old cars with the extra monthly cash we would have.

Eh, I guess I'd be like the guy someone asked "what would you do with a million dollars". He said "well, I'd pay what bills I could and the rest would just have to wait".

A few years back a young couple in a nearby town won 200 million. First thing they did was pay off All the Churches mortgages in their town. Then they built a New Sports Complex for the School. Then they built a Grocery Store with a Nice place to eat in it. Neither one of them quit their Day Jobs. Everything they did was to help the Community and their neighbors. I don't think I could be as Nice as them but I would like to think I'd try.

I always figured I'd carry on as usual after winning. Invest the bulk, buy a thing or two on the list, pay off the mortgage of course, and take a decent vacation. Now my vacations don't cost much either. It's about "going and doing", not "shopping and staying" in expensive beds. Life as it is now would be so much better knowing the money was there to take care of my simple needs. I would also give back in some way. I'd let it sit and marinade till the right thoughts came.

Re: Wait for it ... Wait for it ...Doh !

About 10 years ago some guy was worse than dirt poor. He lived in a camper and it was being repo'd. He stopped for gas and spent his last $2 on a PB ticket. He was the sole winner of $400M . He ended up buying a whole bunch of ranch land and not much publicity about him since.

Me, I'd buy 4 sections of land. I have it picked out already. There is 7 existing homes. All but 2 would get windows and doors removed. The existing crops would be left alone. Just let it all go natural. In the NE section is a big hill. I'd build a 40x40 house into the south side of that hill and have my own 1000 yard shooting range. The NE 1/4 of that section would be fenced off for horses per my wife's wish. The gravel roads except the center one coming in from the north would get removed. Then after 5-6 years I'd have some prime hunting land to invite autistic and underprivileged kids for an experience they'll never forget. The kids and their families would stay in the modest houses I save. I figure a couple weeks all expenses covered for each should be about right.

Smart. All of those donations reduced their tax burden by a ton and helped out others.
