Timken 221 transfer case: output shaft play?

I have a '60 K10, and while doing some maintenance(removing front driveshaft to replace a u-joint), discovered in & out play in the front output shaft, in the transfer case. I'm assuming this is not right(and not good). Can anyone confirm, there should be no play(movement) of the shaft? Am I looking at a rebuild, to correct this?
I have the shop manual, it does not show any shims on this shaft to adjust bearing preload. Anyone have experience with this problem? Thanks, Dave

Re: Timken 221 transfer case: output shaft play?

I would try to loosen the lock nut on the yoke and re-torque it. Just to see. Probably needs a rebuild. I just had my np205 and sm465 rebuilt. I installed them Saturday. When I read this, I walked to my garage and yanked on the rear output yoke through the open hump . NO in out play. Not sure it helps, but it would bug me too, were I you. In time one of the smarter tranny/transfer guys will chime in. Mines 205 Not a timkin, but probably the same or similar bearing setup.

Pull the rear cap off the input shaft and see if it's worn, also as Dd said about the yoke. any grinding noise other that t/f case wine?
