Power Steering 68 gmc 4x4

I have the pump and the power steering box , what else do I need to change over from manual to PS on my 68 gmc 4x4

You might want to get in touch with Mike (67-72chevytrucks). He’s in Marquette, MI and completes 100 point concours restorations on these trucks. He has a 1968 short fleet 4x4 50th anniversary truck. He’s been looking for the ram assist power steering components for a 4x4 for several years now.

Pittman arm
Mounting bracket
Hoses
And not sure if the tierod is the same for manual and power

This is a piece of cake to do. Steering box (4wd only), steering pump, brackets for steering pump, pulleys for steering pump. hoses between box and pump, small clip that holds hoses to frame, pitman arm, fluid for pump, belt for pump. Done!!

I've never owned a '68 (yes to '67)

It seems some '68's didn't have the accommodation dimples to take a integrated power box. Take a close up pic of your mounted manual box.

If it doesn't have the dimples some people add a spacer

or even modify the frame.

Otherwise you're looking for something that wasn't even listed as an option

1968 introduced the intregrated PS box and it is fatter. So the frame horn is different in this area.



I don't remember seeing power steering being available on 4x4 in '68. Best just to look your frame to see if the box will fit. If it is flat then Captfab makes an adapter bracket.

Yes power steering was available in 1968. If I remember correct, the 4x4 used ram assist with the dimple in the frame.

Mine is a 68 1/2 ton 4x4 and it's flat ? but again why the nipples?

It appears that adapter plate is used to accommodate the 4th hole in the PS box ? Other wise have to drill a 4th hole in the frame .

The dimples space the box off of the frame. Without them The area circled in green will hit the frame before the mounting ears on the box are tight against the frame.

Than this has to be changed too , where do you get one ? I looked at LMC ,they don’t offer them?

I know this isn’t rocket science but I have contacted several outfits. Like lmc, brothers, eklers , cardid . no one seems to know about this and what I need but I knew someone on this board would have answers.
I can find one but it’s for a lifted truck and has only 3 hole to mount , mine has 4 ?

Some one point me in the right direction .

Closed knuckle steering arm. Maybe with the right combinations of tie rod ends you can make a drag link of the correct length.

I am not familiar with your gear box in pictures
It is not the normal Saginaw box I think most are referring to
Do you know what it originally came off of

As far as the steering arm and tie rod you circled those should work
With a Saginaw box and pitman arm (see pic)

Thanks for your input. The gear box in the pic ,is the non PS unit . I have the PS box sitting on the work bench . The reason I am some what mystified is no one has answers for a conversion , except on this site. It looks like I have the info I now need for my PS box installation. But should I run into a road block , I’ll be asking questions once again.
