Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build

The one wire alternator just requires a single wire straight to the battery. All the other wiring that goes to the external regulator just has to be curled up and not worried about tell you put in a new wiring harness. And if you do all you have to do is pull the regulator and all the original wiring out, cause a single wire alternator is internally regulated.

I think the alt might be good. I've started the truck a couple of times with no problems.

Fuel tank, less luck. Might just save for the lmc one.

Cab patching and seat refinishing is next after fuel tank. Then body work.

Let's see how I do next week

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build

Still looking for a fuel tank solution. The alt is good. Tmr I will hopefully be working on the interior cab a little more to try to get this truck to a drivable state.

Maybe I will hit up a junkyard for an s10 tank to try to make fit.

I think I might also try to clean off some of the front end rust and reassemble the front end to try to get my neighbors off my back. If I can get this thing licensed that would be awesome.

I know that lmc sell under bed tanks. Then you won't need to worry about a fuel smell in your cab. I know the feeling of having a neighbor on your back....Just don't deal with it the way I did. Any way hope you can get yer truck licensed and regestered.

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build

Welcome to the insanity. 1st neighbor: have you thought about a portable garage/quanset hut? You can pic them up for about $300 for a 12x20, cheaper..a couple pieces of fence to hide behind, cheapest...cover it with a tarp. 2nd seat: as far as I know any seat from a gm truck should be adaptable to your truck, hit the boneyard and you can probably have a nice one for $50. 3rd Tools: find a harbor freight they are online if you don't have one local, they have an electric impact gun for $39 last I checked. I have one and it works better than my $300 air impact. You can sign up online for coupons and most hotrod type magazines have 20% off coupons and other coupons. For short$ their tools are very good. 4th..have fun, good luck on your build!

First picture indicates power brakes and second is either ac or power steering.

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build

Check around, I've never had one but my guess is a Hydroboost . Like I said, never seen one, don't even know what they do because I've skipped over all that but do a search on here and I think you'll find some info on it. 2nd pic follow the hoses and that should give you an idea what they are for. As a newbie to this old school stuff I highly recommend getting a shop manual for this truck, especially where you plan on keeping it mostly stock. as for a tank, when you hit the boneyard check for a 73-87 blazer, I think they had a tank that fit pretty much dead on between the frame rails. Summit racing also sells tanks for short$ and can get you set up cheap. You mentioned scrapping the bed, in the pics it looks pretty darn good to me. Get rid of the rotted wood strips and you can throw some plywood in there until funds are available for a bed-wood kit. I have also seen where people have used CLR and a scrubby for rust removal inside and out and they had AMAZING results, kept the old hot-rod patina. Cheap paint, John deer Blitz Black check out you-tube or just do a google search and it might be what you're looking for. I'm doing one of mine that way. Once again ,Good Luck and don't feel foolish asking questions. The folks on this site are fantastic and will go out of their way to help.

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build

X2 BOXER957! I've been with this old stuff for a few years and learned a ton but never have I seen that brake setup before. I am sure the pump on the motor is for A/C cause I don't recall power steering ever being an option until the late 60's early 70's, but I know power brakes should have been an option. If that's a power brake setup than that's a rare find! And ever better, if that factory air especially with a 6 cylinder than that's really rare!

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build

well the brakes seem to work really well, but the steering takes quite a bit to move...so i think it's probably got power brakes and no power steering. following the hoses and looking at the interior it has AC so that's the other one. I wasn't sure when PS became an option.

I'm back to thinking about the alternator. ran it today a bit and only got up to 12.4V while it was running....so I will look into that further at a later date.

I don't plan to scrap either option from the truck. got the seat back in place (not bolted, just in place to make it easier to move and try things) or at least the base is back in.

A full restore on this truck isn't going to be possible here with my neighbors. they are the worse when it comes to this kind of stuff.

get it functional and fix little things here and there....that's the plan for this one right now....a full restore will come in the future....but I will have to move first.

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build

To me its, Who the heck cares what the neighbors think? I am an American citizen and I have the right to do the things I need to do when I want to ON MY PROPERTY. My neighbor always threw a fit everytime I would mow the lawn or work on my truck cause I was making to much noise. To me it was shut the heck up and leave me alone. And after he realized I was not going to listen to his wining he gave up cause there was nothing he could do about it. I don't give a darn about my neighbors think of me. If I'm not doing anything against the law then the heck with the neighbors! All I can say is flex your rights cause you don't have to let your neighbors control you. Around here in Oregon our law enforcement won't even come out to help you unless someone's been shot and killed! I'm gonna do a frame off resto even if my neighbor is yelling at me. Anyway, enough with my crap. It still sounds like the voltage regulator is holding back your charge. If you put a one wire on there you will notice a huge difference.

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build

Looking at the dash its hard to tell if that's factory air cause of were its placed on the dash. Most of that had factory air that I have seen had them built in the dash. If you can find the vin number, and type that in on the internet maybe you can find out what options that truck had.

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build

I've heard that the original systems looked like this one....but I'm not really sure. it looks factory due to the controls being in the dash the way they are. it's doesn't look like there is a lot of splicing or anything of the wiring...actually most of the truck looks pretty stock to me. the more i think about it, the more i might have the truck back to it's original show room states. a stock restore might be in store here.

The next project will not be this way...but I want to get this one mostly done first (and move)

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build

What's the box underneath your radio? That looks like an old Vintage Air unit. I agree with T.J. it's YOUR yard , do your best to make it presentable after that ...Deal with it. I was thinking last night, another place that you need to check out is Speedway Motors. They have great prices on tanks, floats, gauges but especially if you decide you want to keep it vintage but a little hot-rodded they have all the go fast goodies. Did you try that CLR for rust remover? The other guys truck looked like yours when he started and looked like the paint was just faded when he was done. Keep up with the good work, every step is in the right direction even if you don't see a result, you learned something.

That is a vintage air box. I don't know if that was an option at the time.

Anyone know where to find option sheets....i would just like to know what options were even available on these trucks

A/C was an option, but I am not sure if there was an aftermarket version back then. You could probably surf the internet and learn about options that way, but I don't think there are option manuals.

Aye lad. it is, but with some research you can figure out all the options. Like on the drivers side kick panel there should be an option sheet for the available motors for that year. I would be interested in finding out. I believe they were the 153 4 cylinder, the 230 6 cylinder, the 250 6 cylinder, the 292 6 cylinder, and the 283 v8.

I think the ac is factory. It was available as a dealer installed option and they were put in like mine is....it wasn't until the 70s that they were integrated into the dash

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build

Got the seat bottom put in the other day...it is not bolted in as some of the bolts have been snapped off by the previous owners. I did manage to find out some of the options available on this truck and I think the ac might just be original.

Tmr I'm hoping to get the seat top back in.

I will also be looking for some mirrors soon...probably the rectangular ones.

Great! Good process so far. Are you talking about the Jr. West Coast style mirrors or the stock mirror brackets with the 5x7 mirror? You can see pictures of what I am talking about @ http://www.TruckandCarShop.com Part numbers 60-01801 or 60-02025.

I vote for the fuel tank behind the seat. With a new tank and new gasket you won't have an odor problem. Plan on a new sending unit. Buy the cover and you'll never know it's back there.
