i have been reading about the different upgrades and would like some suggestions on replacing the stock springs with some more modern one and this is based on whether the stock 228 runs. plans are run the 228 with a 99 s-10 blazer rear and upgrade the front to discs with a speedway kit. i'm reading S-10,Ranger,Dakota......? anyone using Toyota or Nissan leafs? thanks

most are probably people people like me who want the same answer as you and keep clicking back. i know obviously these springs are narrower then the newer trucks so ive always been curious too if you have to fab hanger mounts or can you use the existing ones etc.

Re: 51 gmc leaf springs

I need to drag the 92 Dakota that I have for a parts rig out of the weeds and jack the back end up to get a look at the rear springs and the way they mount. I am pretty sure they bolt on quite similar to the Dodge Caravan springs.

We hashed it around a couple of years ago and Dodge Caravan and Grand Caravan rear spring hangers from the late 80's and early 90's at least have spring hangers that unbolt from the donor rig. There are two lengths depending on the wheelbase of the van. My old all wheel drive 3 seat Grand Caravan had longer rear leaves than the 85 Dodge Ram mini van I have out in the side yard has. Good thing is that the Pull your own parts places are full of those vans and the springs and hangers should be dirt cheap.

If I get the strut changed on the daily driver beater in time I'll see if I can drag the Dakota out and turn it around so I can start pulling what I want off of it and lift the rear up and get a photo or two. Don't laugh at the little wimpy rear axle in that truck though. It will head to the scrap yard if someone locally doesn't buy it and the price is beyond dirt cheap.

71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant.
77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Re: 51 gmc leaf springs

I got a TCI parabolic set up for my 50. Went from the original closed rear to an 8.8 with 3.73 gears. Also went with T-5 hooked up to my 235

The TCI springs and mount center the axle in the rear fender openings

Springs, hangers, U bolts, shocks and shock crossmember. All bolt in but will weld in place when finished

Think it was 600 bucks
