heres my 4 valve headed 6-71 i purchased from my college for 300 bills, i put it back together after peices and a rebuild kit had been scattered around the school. governers shot and needs a new blower and injectors but man it was cool firing her up it smoked the whole school out literaly! my ole man has a good roadranger sitting around one day i wanna make a hauling rig built around this engine

I must of scrapped about 20 of those a few years ago. 6v71s 8v71s 12v71s, a few old cummins too. All in big rigs. Hated to do it but nobody seems to want them enough to pay for them. I remember one had an air starter on it. In the 70s they were in everything and a lot were cab overs back when they had length limits cab overs were an obvious choice. Still some market for the 4cyl, in heavy equipment. Still got a 471 in a grader and a 453T in a RT crane. Screaming green oil pukers but they are powerful for their displacement thanks to the 2 stroke design.

Good sounding 6V-53.

Reminds me of the Old Look GMC buses we used to ride in when we were kids. We would sit on the bench seat way in the back just to listen to that sweet sounding Detroit.

Detroit engines were in about all of the cranes in the 70's to 80's . 150 ton 518 Link Belt

71 Series. Sounds like it could be a 12V-71, but a little hard to tell.

here is a "crusty" 6v53n in as acquired state...


just beginning to clean it up, it does run, I drove it 20 miles home,
it is kind of disappointing sound wise as it has a large single muffler,
as attested to by this video..H70 running walkaround

In the summer of 1970 I was skidding logs near Hot Springs, AR. I had the little Detroit to the floor and a gear came off the blower. It fell down in the gears below it and stopped the engine instantly. Needless to say, it made a mess. While they were fixing my skidder, I got a job in construction, and the rest is history.

You know, I never thought about that till now, but that blower gear probably determined my destiny.

Sounds nice to me. You really need to be careful running those wipers in raggedy condition like that. You could end up scratching that windshield!

Hello, I just now found this and am back from memory lane.
At 19 the Air Force sent me to work on Detroit,s in there boats. Yes 21footers with 6V-53s, 45' with twin 8v-71s, 63' with 12v-71s, 85' with 16v-71s and 92s . The gen packs were 4s and 6s. I worked on them until Gram / Rudman said the AF didn't need a navy, about 10 years.
What a great time I had then and now thinking of it.

when i was a parts manager at a john deere dealer many moons ago, i used to help a farmer/buddy and haul sugar beets in the fall. they had an old louisville ford with a detroit, i'm guessing a 6v71t. enjoyed row the road ranger and listening to the old girl talk all day! i think i was the only one that could stand driving the "old truck".

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a young tech savvy guy and I agree that getting old film photos onto the internet--the whole 9-yards--is kind of a PITA.




Hey anyone, what were some of the first big trucks that used Turbo Detriots? Did any trucks come with turbo 12v-XX's? That sounds like a hell of an engine even for a rig.....but it seems a lot of those giant Turbo monsters were more Marine/Industrial rather than automotive.


Question 2: (Depending on question 1) Were any turbo Detriots used in trucks pre-1975?

8V71T in trucks in 71-72, About 72-3 DD had a big push to entice the V12 in trucks. They had some special sales brochures plus a V12 belt buckle for bait , and I got one ! V12Ts were available from Pete, KW, and Freightliner, primarily in COE chassis .

When you were at John Deere I'm wondering if you ran into many calls for parts for a John Deere 435? I have a '59 with a 2-53 Detroit.
