Oil leaks!!

Blazer driven on the freeway. Smoke from leaking oil from the engine hitting the exhaust manifold.

I suspect the valve cover gaskets are leaking, that fine I can deal with that at home. My friend who checked it out quickly said it looked like everything was leaking as oil was everywhere. His shop is checking it out Monday. It hasn't really been driven in two years so could that be a cause as I don't recall it leaking horribly then. The question is which leaks can I NOT deal with at home with hand tools so I'll have to pay to get fixed??? Cover gaskets no issue, easy access underneath (like engine and trans pan no issue) but as I sort of blundered into this classic car/ blazer thing I'm still at the start of my learning curve in mechanical terms. Another way to put it is - what's the worst case leaky scenario that will need engine removal??

Re: Oil leaks!!

None would require removal of the engine. The worst case scenario would be the rear main seal which can be done in the truck, but will require removal of the transfer case/transmission. Other than that, none of the other seals are terribly difficult.

Re: Oil leaks!!

So it turned out that the oil filter was loose, the engine oil pan was loose, the valve covers were loose... Torqued up correctly and it appears good to go. Always nice to find something that is not as bad as you first thought for a change!!
