Frame repair question

Look for advice on the best way to repair this rust on my frame. The frame is a 72 K10 SWB. Pictures are from inside and outside of left rear. Inside rear spring hanger. I was thinking of cutting out rot and using that as template and make a new piece to weld in. Do I need to plate it also?
Thanks Nathan

Re: Frame repair question

hey nathan,

how are u planning on re attaching the spring hanger, being that you won't have rivets anymore after you cut them off? i would probably flush weld in a piece of 3/16th and drill holes for the hanger. then mock it up. then maybe fish plate in the back and plug weld the holes up with the hanger in place. or grade 8 bolt through one plate, or fish plate the repair spot and bolt in the spring hanger through two plates.

good luck.

Re: Frame repair question

Yea that's the same thing I was thinking and then bolt spring perch back in. Otherwise I think our diesel mechanic has a rivet gun. Thanks for the reply.

I would weld a patch in with the same thickness metal, plate the back a little bigger with 3/16, and bolt the hanger on with grade 8 bolts with washers. Make sure the bolts fit the holes in the hanger and frame snug.

I don't know if these will fit, I think they are made for mid-frame 63-72. If your frame height tapers down then I don't think they will fit.

Re: Frame repair question

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering what the outcome of this repair was. I’ve got a ‘72 4x4 swb frame with the same issue.
