seats/mercury switch

I was talking with a friend this past weekend about installing new style seats into my old truck.

I told him I have found manual seats from a 2003 Chev truck and then I would not have to worry about running power to them. (I am the only one who drives my truck, so why would I want to adjust the seat!).

He then asks me if my seats have mercury switches on them for the shoulder belts? I say WHAT!

He then explains that on his new F()rd truck the shoulder belts do not have any kind of a gravity ratchet to stop the belt from coming out during an accident and that they have a mercury switch built in, that on impact locks the shoulder belts in place.

As anybody ran into this problem (pun not intended).

Nah just never heard of that. Sounds like money the factory probably wouldn't spend

Re: seats/mercury switch

Put em in man, the manual seats don't need power other than to turn on the seat belt light, which you don't have so.....Id like to know how the install goes, it sounds like a good way to go to me. I like those seats.

Re: seats/mercury switch

I have a set of seats from a 2000 silverado in my truck. They have inertia locks for the seat belt, no mercury to play with. The seats are a little snug in a truck, if you're over 6 foot it probably won't be overly comfortable for you.

Re: seats/mercury switch

usually a pendulum switch, not mercury, but the same principle applies. Some of the newer seats interface with the onboard computer ( I know newer model dodge seats do this) Its not a big deal, but you may need a schmatic of the seats/yr truck of the donor. Some seats lock the belts until you apply power, then in the event of an impact, that power is cut via the pendulum switch, locking the belts. This is usually a box mounted under the seat somewhere with a bunch of wires. If you do end up with this type, make sure after you have your seats in, that box is level, or it may not work correctly. Of course, thats also assuming its wired correctly.
