I'm glad that it is working out. I would like to see how you make the trim.

I just cut it long by 1/4” or so and hammered the end over on my anvil with a body hammer, doesn’t look bad, those pieces I will remove he anodizing and polish and paint. I will post pics.

This is getting a little out of hand but it needs the work,
I sandblasted the doors, finished welding the rear floor, replaced the drivers floor pan too, it was pitted and weak.

Carpet is due here on Monday or so. Paint arrived yesterday, I’m using 2009 corvette victory red to match my Z06, chosen because it’s a real nice bright red.
So it’s white Cheyenne vinyl seats, red carpet and seatbelts, white door panels, headliner and visors. Black dash pad.

Re: Crew Cab build preview...

My wife and kids complain loudly about how loud the engine is so I will be trying to quiet it down in the cabin.
No not Dynamat, that stuff is not for soundproofing like most people think. Everybody thinks that crap is the cats-meow, it’s really just to dampen panel vibrations and resonance and past 25% coverage of flat panels there is very little noise suppression with that crap....great marketing they have, the whole world is fooled on their product. Anyway it’s NOT for noise proofing and the Cummins makes lots of plain old noise.
I’m using mass loaded vinyl (MLV) on the complete interior, it’s actually noise proofing material which absorbs sound waves due to is mass of 1lb per square foot. Apparently it absorbs the sound waves and dissipates them as heat into the material.
I removed everything from the inside firewall to install it all the way up around the upper inside cowl to the windshield. I will be lining the inside of the doors, the gas tank and under the hood too.
I will post up the results and some pics when it’s done.
I also got the mass backed carpet from ACC and a little Dynamat type product.

That sounds like a great plan.
I looking forward to see that.
And for the wife and kids complaining issue / Does this company that
makes the MLV make earplugs?

The red exterior with white interior will look amazing Randy! Cant wait to see the finished product...

Where would a guy get ahold of this MLV? I want a quiet truck too.

Edit: They sell it at Home Depot and Amazon.

I have extra MLV and a sewing machine, I might make them a bomber helmet from it.
Seriously though, I drove it 550 miles one day with my son, I didn’t even notice it being loud, when we got home he was composing about it....I used to always have big block vettes and trucks they were all loud. When I get in my K10 it’s so quiet and tame so I decided to give it a try quieting it down, I kind of think it’s an effort in futility but I’m trying, they like the truck and I do plan on some road trips with it.

Thanks I think it will be sharp too. It’s a work truck though so it’s gonna be hard to keep clean.

I bought the MLV off amazon, $190 for 100sf. It will be here tomorrow, I’m excited to see what it’s like.

I’m with you randy, at idle Ofcourse they’re loud. But I know mine cruising with about 6 lbs of boost you don’t even know it’s a diesel, smooth as silk. But I also have a noisy turbo that could be distracting me. What size pipe is coming off your down pipe? I’m 3.5 till it gets to the bottom of the cab then 4” out the back with a 5” tip

I think it’s pretty quiet at cruise too, and it’s boosting about the same as yours, slight turbo whine. I think it’s 4” pipe from turbo flange back. I don’t really get exhaust noise, just engine.

Have you played with your timing, perhaps in their head they are hearing the rattle? Just thinking out loud because mine with the windows up with stock insulation you’d have no idea it has a Cummins under it. Idles smooth with a slight rattle, add fuel/boost she purrs, add more and it has everyone going wtf is that, lol

Re: Crew Cab build preview...

I forgot that the timing can change the noise level, I think more timing is more noise at low rpm? I will look that’s up again.

Preview of my new carpet...it’s a suburban carpet set, doesn’t fit right under the back seat because I have the truck cab floor back there, I am planning on cutting it in front of the seat so it lays flat on the burb floor, then buying a truck carpet set for under the rear seat, doesn’t look too bad, might run it a while like it is.

Re: Crew Cab build preview...

Correct, past the optimum level increased timing adds more rattle, mine has a slight rattle at idle but with my bigger injectors as soon as you start fueling it, then it smooths right out. More timing moves the power band up with more rattle if you don’t have the fuel. Lower timing more bottom with more heat in the exhaust for a quicker spool, but at the same time more black smoke before spooling and less heat used in the actual combustion cycle. With a VE all you have to do is rotate the pump so it’s easier to play with. In your case it’s a tad bit more involved to keep it precise.

Re: Crew Cab build preview...

A thought on the carpet.... if you didn’t buy the two front burb pieces as a set but individual, use the rear you have in now but do some recess cuts under the seat to help it lay down. Get a truck front piece and cut it off a few inches past where it goes under the burb mid section. Then use the leftover and put after the burb mid section so you are carpeted all the way to the back of the cab. You know me, just sharing thoughts.

The burb floor under the front seat is different than the trucks and the burb carpet is 2 piece with the joint unde the seat that’s why I had to buy it.
I decided I am going to try to heat and form the rear burb carpet to fit the truck floor, I’m looking at heat guns right now.

That red and white is going to look dead sexy. Lots of Cadillacs had that combo thru the 70s-80s and I always liked how it just popped.

Thanks guys, I’m pleased with the color. It dried a little fast, I will need some slower reducer. It feels good to get some color on it. Its going outside today so I can work on the doors,
I’m painting the inside of the doors next. Hopefully by the weekend I can have it back on the road.

Re: Crew Cab build preview...

So after considering Madkidd’s thoughts on the rear carpet and seeing when I test fit it that it goes all the way to the gas tank I did some research and decided I will try to re-mold the rear section to fit the truck cab floor in the back.
Apparently the carpet is heated to 375 degrees, I think it was and it becomes very soft and they place it in a mold, there are videos of it on YouTube. Some people say it can be molded using a heat gun and others say use an upholstery steamer.
I have one of those torpedo kerosene fired shop heaters, I think I will protect the part that fits with plywood clamped over that portion and drape it in front of the heater while moving it back and forth to distribute the heat and see what happens, my wife and I will unclamp it and place it on the floor, I will have some weights, maybe sandbags to weigh it down and I will push it in place with my hands, it should work.

During the research I saw some videos of using an upholstery steamer to fit seat covers, I sell a set or 2 of bucket seats per year and right now I have the seats and carpet to fit in this truck so because I love tools, I bought an upholstery steamer. It should help fitting this truck and the upcoming ones, should help get the carpet fitted better too, I put carpet in my K10 last February or so and it took a long time or it to un-wrinkle.
Here is the one I bought.
Apparently you can steam old foam and bring it back to life too, I hope it works because this old foam is very distorted and compressed.

Surprised you didn’t mention that last night when I called, I like that you’re doing all this before me, saves me from too many experiments.

I had just turned on the bbq when the phone rang and my wife was making salads so I had to run, plus I couldn’t wait to get off the phone and tell her about your southern accent.

I used to work in Atlanta for a month at a time, probably did it 5 times or so, she went with me a couple times and really liked it there and especially the nice people and their accents.
