Help With Filler Neck Grommet

Do these things come off easily? I want to pull it off before I paint. Will it come off without pulling the tank neck?
Thanx!

You will have to pull the tank befor you can get it out. If it is verry old it would probly be a good idea to replace it also. We have both the 1 1/2" and 2" grommets in stock. (Genuine GM) WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

I have had people come by the house and buy a new grommet and we have replaced it right then in the driveway. Just takes a little time putting the new one on with the lip of the grommet.

So, Dave, you are telling me that I CAN put it on without pulling the tank neck? Mine is a non-ECS tank (came from WA originally).
Thanx!

I just popped my old one out by pushing it in with a screwdriver. Probably not the ethical way of doing it but it made pulling the gas tank alot easier.

I would think that with some dish detergent and patience, you might be able to install one with the tank in.

The way I do it is use a pair of needle nose pliers to grab the grommet and pull on it until it is breaks free in one area of the grommet from the hole. Then I just pull it free with my hand. If the grommet is hard, cut a small slit and pull it with the pliers until it bascially tears off. To put the new one on I work it in the hole and use a long narrow screwdriver to work the inner lip in the hole. I have not had any problems doing it this way. I have heard of people using some kind of lubricant to make it go in the gas filler hole. I have never chipped the paint because you need to be really carefull and take your time.

I've installed a couple with the tank still in the truck. If I can do it - you can too.
Just get some KY Jelly and ... never mind.

I had to loosen the bolts up on my tank and had a heck of a time changing mine, the filler neck wasnt centered in the hole.
