Ebay sale: is this a real or bogus SPID?

Nice looking K5 (not mine) but the SPID raises some questions in my mind...anyone seen a SPID with X's and similar font, lowercase "s" in VIN, handwritten wheel base, "GVW rating", and such...

Because I'm trying to get better at spotting BS even if it's a nice ride...

Re: Ebay sale: is this a real or bogus SPID?

font looks incorrect, but it "looks" like an old SPID, if someone were to fake one, then it would look much newer, I think. Unless he swapped in the SPID or glovebox door from another trashed, but originally nicely optioned, Blazer. Anyway - only way to know is to compare it to the riveted (and make sure they are correct rosette rivets) VIN tag and the frame VIN. Sure looks like a nice Blazer, but I'd want to authenticate it before buying.

Re: Ebay sale: is this a real or bogus SPID?

It wouldn't surprise me if that was legit, the factory did weird things back then and that could have been done on a type writer by the new guy who forgot the wheelbase and started typing tinted glass wrong and XXXX ed it out.

There aren't any crazy desirable options on that SPID either. If it was an upper trim level or had rare options I would question it more. But that appears to be a very clean Blazer optioned with nice, smart options.

Re: Ebay sale: is this a real or bogus SPID?

The decal looks legit but there are options listed that aren't options, aren't the standard option description, and the font is odd....it's puzzling me

SPIDs, build manifests and Mulroney window stickers weren't individually hand typed, even as far back as the mid 1960's.

The information was "broadcast" to several areas of the plant and they were simply printed remotely, using an IBM teletype system.

Re: Ebay sale: is this a real or bogus SPID?

. . . .

I think the truck is "original" but the SPID isn't.

I don't think they would have ever written in the wheelbase with pen.

The font looks too much like it came from a typewriter also.

. . . and it looks like it has the "footprint" of it's original valve cover decal.

But, it looks like it DOES have the correct mount on the right side for the washer bottle that came with the factory auxiliary battery !!!

Where's CHIPFLYER ? He could tells us what this is.

. . . .

Re: Ebay sale: is this a real or bogus SPID?

The type font is peculiar. Spent some time this morning looking through old typewriter font faces. The "5" character in the font is what caught my attention.

In the spid posted, the top line of the "5" seems to arch upward. Looking at spid images from google, the "5" (the top line of the five), appears to be straight across.

Estimated guess is that someone simply tried to restore a previously damaged spid.

They sell blank SPID labels. I'm sure that is probably what this one is- a do-over.

Re: Ebay sale: is this a real or bogus SPID?

I think it's bogus. In 71 I believe the paint color would be called out last. Also the options should be in alpha order from left to right and then top to bottom. 350 and A/T are out of order for sure. There may be others. I can't read all of it.

Ad says no modifications but carpet, steering wheel and dash pad would be black with parchment interior, not saddle, although I like the saddle better.

Re: Ebay sale: is this a real or bogus SPID?

I'm no archivist, but the aging looks suspicious too, like it got left out in the rain, not normal aging you'd see inside the glovebox (unless it and the windows were open, I suppose).

Definitely NOT the standard chain-drive IBM printer or whatever they actually used. This is clearly hand-typed and I'm not aware of any that were. If there ever were, I'd bet we'd be seeing a lot of "documented" shortbox bigblock trucks running around with that explanation, but we don't, so I call BS. But that's just my opinion, and I've been wrong before.

The SPID may not look good, but the Blazer sure does.

Type font aside, I've never seen a SPID label wrinkled like that. I"ve seen them crooked, but never wrinkled all over. Fake aging job gone wrong???

Re: Ebay sale: is this a real or bogus SPID?

We'll never know but I wonder if someone at the dealership mistakenly peeled off the SPID at time of delivery and the folks there at Ed Blacks Chevrolet (now a Walmart) got a hold of a blank and typed in the details off the invoice.

I agree that the font looks a little off and they would not have written in wheel base etc. It might have been a 10 year old 'redo' made to look 40 years old, who knows?
The other thing that I think is a little off is the cruise control system....factory? I'm not sure but if so, it should be listed on the SPID.
As well, it looks a little incomplete but I'm not 100% up on everything that comes with the cruise.
My two bits.
