chopped 66 short step

This truck is just sitting on the side of the highway about 50 miles out of missoula....
Dig the square headlights, and the ford taillights!?!
It has 5 lug wheels, and judging by the chain on the hood, the motor must be special.
Kdrodworks316 says that he has seen it sitting there for at least the last 5 years.
not too sure about the reverse angle chop, or the extra small back window... , but we'll have to look into it anyway.

Re: chopped 66 short step

Another seemingly, otherwise good 4-5-6 Chevy truck suffers from medical malpractice...not down with mixing breeds or the flat-top look. Judging by the license plate, this truck has lived out its useful life and is in need of a new owner to restore the headlights, tail lights and top to its original appearance.

I hope someone saves it and gives it its face back. Thanks for sharing.

Re: chopped 66 short step

I am thinking a good lowering, new head and taillights/grille/bumpers?, different wheels, and this could be a neat looking truck.
I do wonder how much bondo is in it... Every time I find a "good" fender around here, that dosent have factory paint, there are all kinds of suprises in the rust patch!- Like liscense plates ,coffee cans, galvanized sheet metal, insulation foam+bondo... the list goes on...

The other thing I would do with this, is unchop the back of the roof about 2 inches, I wonder how they got the measurements off?, because it sure looks like the back is cut more than the front.
I would probably install a bbw too , that sbw is too small.

bags and a fleet bed, then it would look right. chopping a truck is work enough, cant even fathom a unchop.

Re: chopped 66 short step

if you just drop it, change the lights, and take a little more out of the front of the top this could be a cool truck. i dont like the back glass treatment either, but its not horrible. i think it would need to be a fleetside too.

well....
the last time I was in the area the truck was gone... saw it this weekend at the car show in town, someone form kalispell picked it up and gave it a new lease on life....
they did a bunch more mods, and I got quite a few more pics that are on a friends camera, that I will post later.
I will have to say that most of these mods are not ones that i would have done, however, if the guy was doing a traditional late 70's/mid 80's build , he nailed it.

regardless I am glad to see someone is enjoying it, and it isn't on its way to china.

more detailed pics in a couple days..

Re: chopped 66 short step

Let me ask you guys something if I may.

Out here where I live there are dozens of 60's trucks sitting around in back yards and old closed up wrecking yards. From a distance they all pretty much look like parts trucks but then again one mans trash is anothers treasures.

Just exactly how does one go about approaching these old truck owners to see if a guy can buy any of this stuff?

I mean they are here in the desert and from what I have seen are rust free and not all beat to hell mostly.

I have a place to store them if I can buy them.

Tell me, how would you try to buy this stuff?

Re: chopped 66 short step

How about if you dont know who the owner is? there is a forest near where i live and i had some good adventures in there when i was younger i remember there were about three cars in there and one truck they all looked like they were from the 50's and i always wanted to just go in there and take them home but you know parents they want to follow the rules and would always tell me to ask the owners if they were for sale .... well a couple years past and i went back sad to say they were missing limbs left and right then i forgot about them now i got my truck and decided why dont i go see what i can use from them so i went back and all that was left was frame under inches of mud so my question is " How would you be able to get these trucks if u have no idea who the owner is and it is just in abandoned land?

Re: chopped 66 short step

Tony:

No such thing as "abandoned land"

If a guy wants to know an owner of the lands name he just has to get the parcel information and call the county recorder to find out who owns it.

I have played up in the hills around where I live for better than 50 years. Ever since I was a real young pup.

Back in those days people respected private property and an old car or truck would be left intact by anybody passing through the area.

Not true these days. If they don't steal it they vandalize it.

Damn shame people can't behave themselves.

Re: chopped 66 short step

It doesnt look hacked....but its still ugly.

As for the green one, I actually like the color and the body is straight....lose the garbage and lower it and it would actually be a decent looking truck.

Re: chopped 66 short step

I myself agree that the mods to the truck don't fall into the normal scheme of things, but if you look past the unusual, someone did some pretty damn good bodywork. The gaps look good, the motor, paint and airbrush work are great. At least it is back on the road and I'm sure he is proud of it.
