How did i miss this! that thing is awesome. reminds me of the stuff you used to read about in farm show magazine. i wish i still got that periodical. ill have to ask my grandma if she still gets it. i used to read it after we ate lunch and were recovering in the front room at grandmas(she makes awesome classic midwestern farm food)

as for your inlet elbow, yours looks like the OEM dodge stuff for a second gen. its 73* degrees.

i dont know what the PN i posted earlier references to, but it should have the same diameter outlet but at a 90* angle instead.

I'm in the same boat as you with needing a 90* elbow. Was doing some chatting with the both Ryan's one night and I think we came up with this being the one that is needed.

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

84ChevyguyID - I looked at mine and it has the same elbow as you have. Modifying the inner fender to make it work didn't take long on mine, just pulled out a hammer and dolly. I took some pictures when I did it but they aren't the greatest quality. I was also able to use the factory pipes, just had to shorten them up a bit. Hopefully you will have it on the road by the time we make our St. Anthony Dune trip.[ATTACH]Name: HPIM3018[1].jpg

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Well I ordered the elbow, will see how it fits in a week when it gets here.
Ryanroo if you liked that one, here is the first truck loader we built. Its on a 1946 diamond t 5 ton military 6x6 chassis. Used a 440 dodge motor and a torqueflite trans. We left the stock transfer case in place. Use high range for running down the road and low range for field work. Also has all wheel drive or you can kick the steer axle out. Doesnt turn very sharp but is great over rough ground, dikes, pivot track, ect. I have a crappy cell phone vid of it.

COS, when are you making the St Anthony trip? It has actually been raining the past few days and I wanted to go try the dunes out but no time

Mattman, any updates on your build?

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Did you order the one from the link I posted? Hopping thats the one i need and that it will work. No updates on the truck, been busy with school and only have about 2 or 3 weeks left. Been trying to find a new job. Once I get a new job progress on the truck should start happening.

Oh and I feel like I have seen that video of the loader somewhere before. Not sure if it was from this forum or a different one.

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Yup thats the one I ordered. I am using the school bus manifold and it puts the turbo in a different location than the dodge one does. That 90 should line up with the stock pipe I have for that side but I will have to lengthen the pipe a few inches to reach the elbow. What manifold is on yours? I should be working on equipment but I keep working on the pickup instead. Last fall on the way home from stacking the last of the neighbors hay, one of the rear axles (or is that the front axle, Hmm) locked up on the red loader and we had to drag it the last 1/4 mile home. I have about 7 weeks before it needs to be working again and we all know how fast time flies anymore....

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

I have an industrial manifold on mine. Has the turbo down and farther forward. I think yours is the same as mine. If I put a 90 on mine it should end up just needing a straight pipe going to the intercooler. I'm making both my intercooler pipes. That sucks about the axle.

I looked at mine and it looks different. If it was the same it would be in mail tomorrow. Do you know what make, year and model that it was used in??

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

It seems like somewhere I read that it fits a ford or freightliner medium duty truck. I am finally coming to the end of a little project I been putting off for 6 months. Installing a crossmember for the front sway bar. I had to pull the front sheet metal off one of my parts suburbans so I could get to the crossmember. Turns out that the core support was in lots better shape than the one I been hacking on to get my dodge radiator and charge air cooler to fit in, so that part was good. I spent at least two evenings pulling the core support, torching out the crossmember and getting all the stinking rivets knocked out of everything. The burb is a half ton and so the frames are different as mine is a 1 ton Mine started out life as a 2 wheel drive so the crossmember it had didnt have provisions for the sway bar to mount to it. The burb crossmember was a little wider than the stock one so I cut it in half and started trying to figure out the best way to get it mounted up. After messing around with it for awhile, I decided I needed to fasten the swaybar to the springs then I could bolt the brackets to it and put the assembly up against the frame to mark holes. My spring brackets are homemade so they dont have the mounts for the sway bar to bolt to so I spotted a couple of nuts on them. I got some holes drilled for the brackets that go under the crossmember then I took each half of the crossmember and started fitting them to the frame and each other. When I got all the pieces set in place I noticed that the driver side of the crossmember sat back further than the pass side by maybe half an inch, I thinking wft?? I had to quit there for the night and spent half the night laying in bed trying to figure out where I screwed up to have the crossmember not be square. If the ends of the swaybar are located correctly over the axle then for some reason is my front axle in crooked?? The next day I ran to town and picked up some parts from a friend and he happened to have a 3/4 ton 4x4 frame sitting there and upon closer inspection the front crossmember is sitting crooked from the factory, like mine is. I dont know why they would do that but it was a big relief to see it. So this afternoon/evening I got the crossmember welded back together, cut out the notch for the dampner to fit it, and made a steering box brace to bolt to it (followed you guy's advise). Just need to pull it out and spend some time with the hand grinder and a can of black paint then I can stick it in for good. I still have to figure out what to do for mounts on the spring brackets for the ends of the swaybar to bolt to but I cant do much there until the front air bags show up and I see what it will take to make mounts for them too. My turbo elbow was on back order but it finally shipped out fri and the airbags havent been shipped yet either so I guess they must not be in stock either. I guess the next project is getting yet another core support hacked up to fit the dodge cooling stuff.

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Thanks, I will have to get some more loader pics for your enjoyment, there are some interesting ones running around here.
Got parts! Air bags, wiring harness, sound insulation stuff, and a 90 degree elbow for the turbo. Started tinkering with the front air bags. The ones I got say they will lift 1,000 lbs @ 100 lbs pressure. They will lift the front the 2 inches I was looking for at 35-40 lbs. I dont have the front clip on so that extra weight will make the psi go up im sure but hopefully they will still do the job. I am thinking about using a level valve on each side to set ride height. I need to incorporate a bump stop into the frame bracket of the air bag but I just threw something together to see if they could even lift it at all. Was pleasantly surprised that they lifted it with that low of pressure.

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

I was cruising Craigslist fri night and came across this 85. The guy only wanted 650 bucks for it. Made it to the bank 10 minutes before closing and grabbed my favorite nephew, "Dougie," and we headed out on a 300 mile round trip and grabbed it. It runs but the kid says it smokes bad. The grill, front fenders, cab, box and tailgate is in excellent condition, has a small dent in the pass door. More parts!!!

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Been thinking about doing a body swap with it to my 84 pickup, its a bit rusty, still has the pedals from the standard trans in it, doesnt have a/c and this new one does. Ever picked up a cab and front clip all hooked together before? doesnt seem like it would be too dificult. Here is a pic of my 84

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Nice score on the new donor! Do you plan to leave the leaf springs and add those big air bags in that box? Or is the smaller one for the front and you got some for the rear too?

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Yeah the big ones are for the back, they are 6 1/2 inches in diameter. My thinking is to take some of the weight off the springs with the air bags and see how they work. I have a level valve on the back ones and I might try a level valve on each side on the front ones. I used half ton rear springs on the front and they are a little too soft for the load without the 4.5 inch air bags to assist them. I have a set of 3/4 ton rear springs that I may have to swap part or all of them in place of the 1/2 ton springs if the front ends up being too soft. Its all one big experiment!

I hear that.... still waiting to find out how my little experiment turns out.

i am considering the same set up with the leveling valves. independent front and single rear with a sway bar.
