VIn Plate

In the recent rebuild of my 72 C10, the VIN plate got misplaced - where can I go to get a replacement - I have the title, but no VIN plate.

Thanks,

KellerMac

Re: VIn Plate

At this point a state, DMV issued VIN tag is really your only legal choice.

Re: VIn Plate

How did you let that happen? Losing a VIN-plate is like losing the truck. Is it on the original frame with the same serial number? There needs to be something to relate the title you have to the truck to prove it isn't some other truck you removed the VIN from. And they'll have a problem with it being removed, it's illegal

Re: VIn Plate

Title doesn't really mean anything if you can't match it to a truck with a VIN plate with the proper rosette rivets. Got a picture of the VIN tag before it was lost? As Tim stated - DMV/state police will have to get involved. They will likely look for OTHER VIN identifiers (i.e. SPID, even though that isn't official, and, more importantly, the frame VIN - and the above mentioned picture of the plate would help, but most people don't photograph that...). Hopefully you have at least the matching frame partial VIN. Without any supporting evidence to make your case, it will become more difficult. But, ya gotta make that call to DMV/state police.

Re: VIn Plate

it can be a horrible mess to lose that plate and get the state involved. In AZ they rivet a new plat onthe truck and all value of the old plate is lost, the stigmatism of having no vin will scare off buyes at resale time.

rosette style rivets are available, but I'm not encouraging any form of dishonesty.

over in New Mexico I have seen state vin numbers stamped into the sheetmetal around the driver side door, horrible big numbers bashed pretty deap into the metal and crushing the metal around the 3/8 inch tall numbers. ugly and damaging

Re: VIn Plate

I've cursed all the hand sanding "around" the vin plate on these trucks many times but you never remove one ,It just leads to instances like this where a considerable value is lost forever . Time to take a trip to dmv with every single piece of documentation you have . This is just one more reason why I tag/title my trucks the day after I bring them home it's much easier to get a problem solved when the state already knows you own it .

Re: VIn Plate

left front upper surface -look in the general area below the alternator/ps pump etc. Best position to view is to lean in over the driver's side fender, with a bright flashlight.

Re: VIn Plate

Some trucks don't have it stamped. Not sure if it's a 67 thing but my 67 gmc has no stampings at either location. A few other ppl here have that too.

Re: VIn Plate

according to a DPS Texas State trooper that worked auto theft the VIN plate is not what is used for your truck VIN. I was going to used the Plate on My Cab and put the Cab on Another frame. He told me I had to use the VIN on the Frame to register my Truck.
