Today's adventure. Some metal fabrication

Well I got tired of picking up mounds of gravel and reseeding the lawn every spring. So I fab'd up a yard guard for my plow. Of course I wait till winter and the first real storm to do it. First is cut a 9/16ths slit down the steel pipe . I got this at the steel works depot near me. Dont use home depot crap.

Then I fab'd up the mounting brackets out of 1/8 inch plate to attach the pipe to the scraper of the plow. Nice using the cnc laser to cut them up.

Tomorrow I'll dismount the plow from the truck and do the welding.

Re: Today's adventure. Some metal fabrication

Let us know how it works. I do not have down pressure on my older plow so I wonder if it would stay down in hard snow for me. It is always amazing how I don't think I'm getting much stone until it starts melting and it looks like a dozer did it.

I don't have down pressure either . But I did some research on this and it works till you get a nice amount if packed snow then you can take it off and plow like normal. Seems it the first few plows with no ice on the gravel that causes the mounds of gravel everwhere

Re: Today's adventure. Some metal fabrication

I do my drive by hand. It's not that much. On most snows I can get away with walking behind the shovel to plow, no lifting. It's not like it gets down to bare, but once the snow is gone there is plenty to rake back into the driveway. Same thing when I have to shovel it.

That's a great idea for stone lanes. I used to contract plow, pretty much all paved, but when I'd do a long stone lane I'd have to paint the plow in the spring from all the stone it picked up when I thought I was floating it (and set skids down a bit)

Re: Today's adventure. Some metal fabrication

I'm the old place along the road. Very easy to clear by hand. Next place will be different. Even when I had a plow I never dropped it on my drive. I have people roll by and offer to plow (free). "No thanks, I got it" is always my reply. Don't want the extra work come spring

Re: Today's adventure. Some metal fabrication

We recently got a 3pt snowblower for the long lanes. The previous owner added to the skid plates and it leaves about an inch and a half of snow. Not ideal but we are going to leave it that way so we aren't throwing stones. Today is its first run so we will see how it does.

Worked beautifully. No torn up sod very little movement of the loose gravel. Once it ice's up there will be no movement. Heavy wet snow with a coating of thick ice. Ice still on the truck after 2 hours of plowing. This will all freeze up as it's going to be below zero tonight and high of 6 tomorrow.

I will be doing that to my plow. What size pipe did you use, around 1 1/4" or 1 1/2"?
