Good Cheap and fast

You only get to pick 2

If it is good and cheap it won't be fast
If it is good and fast it won't be cheap
If it is cheap and fast it won't be good

The only time I have ever gotten all 3 was at Chic-fil-a

I worked in Aerospace and Defense for over 27 years. The gov came out with that "Faster, Cheaper, Better" mantra. They were told you can only get two of the three.

Re: Good Cheap and fast

If your building a Mopar or Ford cheap won't even be a selection. They have poor JY solutions for the motivated person.

I have built a few good, and quite cheap Chevy's. LT1 350's out 350/375 to the crank with just bolt on's, and toss on some 4.11 gears. It will be quite fast. Now we have LS engine quite cheap, and capable of about 450 with a stiff cam. A LT1 of of 450 with a carb, and stiff cam. A Vortec gets tired around 425.

The whole if it is cheap it ain't good only applies to retail transactions of new or rebuilt equipment. If your willing to get your hands dirty when you have to not when you want to. There are plenty of good stuff floating in to pick a parts every week.

I have in my Camaro a 475 hp 383 LT1 built by a high end speed shop that I got for $850. Along with a wreck Corvette. Which is sold parts off of for about $750, and got a running Buick 340.

We reference this all the time in the engineering industry. Pretty much always true. On a similar note, a friend of mine likes to say “If you want it real bad you’ll get it real bad.”

Re: Good Cheap and fast

kinda reminds me of long ago, Paul Harvey had a segment about a govment press release ,where the govment stated that they were working together like finely meshed gears...with this logo on the poster...
on the poster was a pic of 3 gears locked up and unable to move...always thought it was funny

Re: Good Cheap and fast

Great memories... right???

That video tickled me. Where do I sit? Where ever it won't make the boat flip

Type in good fast cheap cars on You Tube and find dozens of cars that are. Shoot, these days about any car is fast and reliable. Just go buy a cheap used car. If you included "cool" that would be another story. But those little sporty Japanese cars are cool, just not my cool.

I did too back in the 60's. I was "dinky dow" with Singha and my "pu-ying" thought it would be fun to do. Night time at 65 MPH on the water with no lights "mi-dee!!"
To this day I wonder how they operated those stingers without occasionally cutting the bottom out of another boat. I saw some with a wire basket around prop, but just as many with an open prop spinning a gazillion RPM just looking for a place create a tragedy.
I saw a V6 on one boat and the balance was a marvel of engineering.
I don't know how fast this guy was going, but it appeared pretty respectable to me!

Re: Good Cheap and fast

You guys got to learn a lot of the language over there. This is reminding me of how I'd hear all that from guys when they got back. I guess it all fades in time, but you'll never forget. What is mi-dee?

Re: Good Cheap and fast

"Mi-dee" is a phonetic spelling equivalent of "no good!"
You're right Tim, a lot of what was learned 52 years ago has faded. In my case there's probably some melding of Vietnamese and Thai and I've forgotten which was which.

Re: Good Cheap and fast

My friend was telling me stories back then and said "If you really want to see one of them get upset all you have to say is...", and out from his Appalachia born and raised mouth came what sounded like a Vietnamese talking. Just hearing that cracked me up, but when I asked what it meant he said, "Just say that to one and you'll be coming back telling me what it means"

Re: Good Cheap and fast

So I disagree with the chart and anyone who says you can't have all three. I can prove my point over and over again, with a little thought. The closest to truth you can say would be along the lines of "Good, fast, & cheap are hard to find together" or "Good, fast, & cheap are rare".

Where I work you can have good or cheap. Your choice. Neither will be fast though as the painters are usually a week behind.
