Re: how to install fender badges WITHOUT removing fender

For lineside repairs we used to use a small feature called a "barrel clip".

It was a small, rounded clip that fit in the round hole in the fender and the post of the emblem was inserted and retained in the clip.

I do not know if they are still available or where to find them but they seemed like a standardized (not GM specific) part.

Dang it.
I was hoping there was a way to just pull the bottom and reach up, then realized how far up the fender it is.

That barrel clip.is it like this? http://www.etrailer.com/Merchant2/gr...-0244_1000.jpg

Yes...most body shop supply (or bodyshops) will have a variety of them.Put a blob of seam sealant on as you put the clip in as they can scratch to bare metal where they go in...and start a rust streak.

Are the original emblems still on? Do you need a suggestion on how to remove them without removing the fender?

Re: how to install fender badges WITHOUT removing fender

Sidebar (just for discussion purposes):

I never liked the fender emblems, especially the Scottsdale version with the yellow paint. When I re-did my truck I filled the holes and did not reinstall the emblems.

Sounds like you already have the holes but if (on the offhand chance) you didn't want to reinstall the emblems here is what we did on the CUCV models: they didn't get fender emblems either so we plugged the holes with a small plastic rivet. I noticed the other day I still have the special installation tool, which I thought might come in handy for something someday (it hasn't).

So that would be a discreet way to plug the holes without having to fill and repaint, if a person was interested.

I had the truck painted with the intention of putting them back on. I just got some NOS ones and now, of course, its time for reinstallation.
I removed them before paint but now that the fenders are lined up, I was trying to keep from pulling them,

thanks for all the help

Care to share your expertise on removal of the badges? I love them so I want to keep them in good shape without breaking them off for paint.

Unfortunately, no.

My technique for removing them (with the fender on) would damage them.

I used a couple dabs of seam sealer by each post with no clips. It's been over a year and no problems with them coming off.

Re: how to install fender badges WITHOUT removing fender

I plan on having all of the fender trim and side trim and tailgate trim holes MIG welded closed prior to my repaint. Here in the desert, I have had all of the trim crack and fall off over the years. The unadorned look is favored by youngsters out here, especially on slammed trucks - 20 or larger wheels and wide/flat looking tires - not my style but I do like the clean look now.

Re: how to install fender badges WITHOUT removing fender

I'll take that suggestion for removing the old ones without taking the fender off. I don't mind if they get damaged in the process. Just don't want to mess with the paint.

Thanks!

I would to hear your method as well, I see lots of fender emblems in local junk yard I would like to get but the pot metal breaks easily with to much force.

Re: how to install fender badges WITHOUT removing fender

I got mine off with the fender in place....I used a brass putty knife and a deadblow ...got putty knife behind the emblem where the stud is ..my emblems were a little loose so that helped...pop the handle of the putty knife with the hammer and it sheared the stud off clean...I was painting truck so wasn't worried about skinning the paint....I put them back on with 3m emblem tape...

Urethane windshield sealer also works good.
