Re: WTB: Eaton "NO-SPIN" from HO 52 or 72

I have one of these in my 1972 k20 suburban. The code on the glove box is. 1G8610. I'm sure the experts amoung us can tell if that's correct for Eaton no spin 4:10 ratio. It's in a running driving currently daily used truck. Gears don't howl or anything like that. Sometimes turning a sharp corner it will pop. So clutches are grabbing a little. Used to use whale oil in corvettes to fix same problem.
I'm close to the guy in Louisville , about 100 miles. I want to sell whole diff. Drum to drum. $500
Questions. Art. 317-750-0065

BNTMOTORCYCLES - That number shows up as a 10 bolt front diff with a locker. How sure are you that it's a Eaton? Mileage? Thanks

Isn't the G86 the code for- "Axle Rear, Limited Slip"?

I stand corrected. The problem is what gear is in it? 4.10 or 4.56?

I'm no expert but from references like this;
http://outintheshop.com/options.html

early rpo codes translate to;
G86 no-spin, gm trade name for locker, typically Eaton
G80 positrac, gm trade name for limited slip, typically Dana

from my understanding, 72 was the last year for HO52/72, 14 bolt corporate replaced them in 73.. G86 lockers in those were called gov-lock [governed locker], also affectionately known as gov-bomb

Re: WTB: Eaton "NO-SPIN" from HO 52 or 72

Upon further investigation, It appears the G86 code applies to both the 4.57 and the 4.10. In a K20 with a V8, the 4.10 was standard and the 4.57 an option so if it is a 4.57, it should show as an option on the glove box door. Now... I have no idea if this is the same on a Suburban. Just to be clear, I'm looking for a 4.10. Thanks for the help.

Re: WTB: Eaton "NO-SPIN" from HO 52 or 72

Now I'm confused, how about everyone else. It's definitely an Eaton, it is a posi and it drives like a 4:11. I haven't pulled the cover , I still drive it. I'm sure it's orig. to the truck. Never heard of a 10 bolt front posi from the factory? But I sure don't know everything about these trucks. Mileage wise I'd say 100,000 plus but I don't really know. I'll try to answer any other questions. Mainly I wanted the guy in Louisville to know one was close. He could drive and try it to see what he was really getting for his money. Other wise who knows till you've installed it. Art

Re: WTB: Eaton "NO-SPIN" from HO 52 or 72

bnt,

K20 suburban most likely has 4.10 from the few I've seen.. a little hint to checking a factory gear ratio on a running truck.. the front is most likely a D44, Dana put ratio tags on the outside of the cover.. if it's original ratio, front and rear would be the same.. the Dana front will likely be 4.09 with a 4.10 Eaton rear..

although not required to be there, if it has the oval metal tag on the pinion cover, that denotes locker installed.. although the tag has no markings or stamps on it, the presence of the tag is the tell..

the locker 'pop' is normal.. here's how they work..
good, brief video worth watching https://youtu.be/AuZqG7pTabw

if you pull the cover to verify for someone, the Eaton ring gear stamping will express the ratio by tooth count..

hope that helps!

I got the 1o bolt front dif from Googling the RPO number. I dug deeper to find that it does mean rear anti spin option that comes with ether gear. Thanks for all the info and pictures Killer Bee
