Re: aluminum painting
I just painted my motor and trans and used the ceramic engine primer in a can then used duplicolor on my motor and aluminum engine paint on my trans. I'll have more pics of the motor later when I get it put togather.

Re: aluminum painting
GM recommends NOT painting transmissions due to cooling issues.

Re: aluminum painting
If paint makes that big of a deal with cooling then theres more of a problem then paint. I have rebuilt hundreds of 400's and every one has gotten paint on the case pan and pump and there all still running. Now if you put a heavy automotive primer\paint\clear maybe some heat retainment but enought to make the trans go bad I have to see to believe. When I get my trans back in and truck going I will let you know if rattle can paint will make the trans run hotter.

Re: aluminum painting
Not trying to tell you what to do or not do, I'm only relaying what I read in a GM Service Bulletin.

Re: aluminum painting
The aluminum parts weren't painted from the factory, so I wouldn't paint them. Just a laziness factor not looks from my point of view...

Re: aluminum painting
If you really want a cool look, smooth the casing and polish the aluminum.

Re: aluminum painting
you have to remember that bulletin from GM is on a totally stock vehicle...an aftermarket cooler makes the problem go away

Re: aluminum painting
I use GM service manuals at work to rebuild turbo 400's and we always painted them because no matter how many times your wash it in coastic soap and extreamly HOT water you still can't make it look good so it was a must for us. I've seen hundreds of them come off the trans dyno and never a problem with no cooler and they went in very heavy trucks. We even paint the huge allison trans when there rebuilt. This is with spray cans like I said not auto paint because auto paint is made to seal out moisture and uv rays so in turn lock in heat so in my opinion Unless its a show car don't paint the trans with automotive SS or B\C but I don't see a problem with rattle cans. I agree with richard Polish that puppy... Hope I'm not Peing anyone off just speaking from experience.
