tail gate handle issue? 98 gmc

The tail gate handle to release the gate is crooked on my truck and some times I have to reach in and pull the left side release rod more because just using the handle doesn't pull it enough. The handle is not broken or flexing, and looks to be mounted perfectly strait. Anyone else have this issue? What was the fix?

You have one of these clips on each bar to the latch. (don't buy the one I linked, there are less expensive packs out there)

They're not bulletproof. They eventually can fail. I suspect the one may be bad on yours.

All you need to do to confirm whether this is the case with yours is to snap out the trim piece around the handle itself. Then watch the motion of things as you pull up on the handle.

I can't remember what attaches the metal bar to the latch plunger itself - there may be another one on the plunger/latch mechanism side you can't see. If so, you can only get to that by removing the latch mechanism on the affected side.

I’ve also had to bend the rod to make it a little shorter

It's usually the clips

Generally the length of the rods doesn't grow over time so if the problem is new, it's usually the clips that are on both ends of each rod. The clips can still be there but worn in the inside (pulling direction) of the rods.

When this happens, the rods have to move further than normal and sometimes appear to be short. That is, not pulling enough to open the tailgate.

The clips are available from a variety of sources in the help aisle from Dorman

Order a new trim peace to. Your going brake the clips that hold it in. Even if you think you whant you will. They are quite easy to brake.
