I am building a 72 K-20 with a 4 speed trans. I just got my small block 400 back from being built and have everything installed. I put the trans and transfer case in last night, then noticed that my block has no provision for the clutch pivot ball.
Has anyone dealt with this? is there a fix or mod? shy of going with an automatic trans.....

Hi Jen
I believe there is a bracket that bolts in place to mount that ball on. I'm not sure where you get them but I bet someone here does.

My engine had the boss for the stud but no threaded hole. I drilled & tapped it.

I am amazed at the amount of guys that jump right in to offer good info.
BW, mine looks like it could have the room to drill, but was leery, not knowing depth or whats behind it

I just put a 400 in my 71 k20. My 4 had a rough cast spot that I decked flat and i also drilled and tapped it....no biggie. But I was a bit worried about doing it.

My oe wire loom mounts on the back of the engine on the bell flange were not drilled either if your going for the oe look.

It's a little scary when you drill it! IIRC, I had a second block that was drilled & I measured the depth. I also used two taps, a regular tap & a bottoming tap. The bottoming tap cuts threads almost all the way the bottom. (hence the name) If you don't want to buy a bottoming tap you can use your regular tap to start the threads & then cut the tapered end off to make a bottoming tap.

I will add for anyone else that run into this that there is also the captain fab hydraulic clutch conversion option too. That’s what I’m doing on my K20.

I think I have a stud ball and mount still. ill look tonight if you still need it
