wet or dry sanding

I am using mp 282 high build primer. Do you guys sand it dry or wet and why? I usually sand it wet with 220 then spot putty reprime then 400 wet before the paint. It seems to me the dry sanding with 220 works faster but make a lot of dust.

Re: wet or dry sanding

I did mine dry to 400g....really didnt want my filler wet...I could sand a area and Immediately go over it with filler if needed...and all my paper up to 400g was dry paper adhesive back..

Re: wet or dry sanding

In Peterson's publication titled Basic paint in bodywork there is no mention of wet sanding in the entire book. I had to read it twice there was no mention at all of wet sanding

Re: wet or dry sanding

It all depends on your preference and if you plan to paint where you sand. Personally I won’t dry sand after the rough work is done because I clean the mess and paint where I do bodywork and it makes things much easier. Before you apply a product over the wet sanding know that even after it doesn’t look wet there’s still moisture there.

Re: wet or dry sanding

The main thing with me is the paper last a lot longer and does not clog and No dust. I wipe down the panel as I go to keep it clean.I let it sit before applying spot putty for a while to make sure it is dry. Just wondering why so of us dry sand and the other wet sand.

Re: wet or dry sanding

ive found when dry sanding that I can take my shopvac and suck the buildup off the paper and it looks just like new...
dust is a downside to dry sanding but I keep the shopvac handy so its not terribly dusty
