Emission Label for 1971 C10

Hello everyone... Just joined as I just acquired myself a 1971 C10 SWB with 350 motor. Thing is, I'm having a hard time registering at in California DMV. It's missing some key labels, namely the Federal Emissions label located, I believe, under the hood. Does anybody have a photo sample of what it looks like from 1971? I found a company licensed and recommended by GM that can reproduce them (www.ecsautomotive.com)... just need a good photo.

And, emissions decals are available from many vendors including Brothers and The Truck Shop right here in SoCal.

Your truck is emissions exempt. Why does the DMV need to see a sticker

Hey leddzepp... Agreed that 71 is smog exempt but I bought the truck out of state. So CA DMV states they require this emission sticker for any vehicle 1968 or newer... Regardless if all 1975 and older vehicles are smog exempt. Part of the vehicle inspection performed by DMV or CHP.

Bummer. I have bought trucks from out of state as well. Never any issues with any emissions stickers, only needed a weight certificate, title, and bill of sale. They checked the Vin plate on the cab and that's it. But any time you go to the DMV it's a crap shoot and will depend on the clerk you get.

Re: Emission Label for 1971 C10

Not emissions exempt, only exempt from the biannual inspection & test. The vehicle is required to have all emissions equipment (including but not limited to, hoses, manifolds, carb, exhaust, converters, pumps, air cleaners, PCV, evap, etc) present and functional. If caught by one of the mobile sniffers, thank goodness there's not many of those anymore, or any peace officer cracking down and get a citation for an unlawfully modified vehicle you have to pass an inspection and sniffer test to clear the citation.

OP, did you ever get this sorted out? I'm in the process of buying an out-of-state '72 K5 and I get the feeling I"m going to run into the same thing.

This thread is 5 years old and the OP hasn’t been here in 4. I say go for it, never heard of a problem before or since this thread.

Indeed. I think that there was more to it than what we read in the OP. I brought a '40 Chevrolet from Idaho into California in '75 that had a 350 and a 400THM. Registered straight through the DMV, no questions asked. They would pick your nose for cars less than some certain age, which at the time I think was '66, when the SMOG stuff started getting stinky, with California-only equipment. The big deal was not allowing vehicles under a certain age and/or mileage in, to avoid the SMOG requirements. If I had to guess, there was likely an issue of serial numbers (not) matching. If the engine was newer than '76 (even now), they'll pick your nose. That's assuming that somebody from the office cared, and got off their butt to go look.

Well, given that the one I'm trying to bring in has a brand new ramjet 350 SBC , I think I'll go to AAA and see if they can do it, or go the private VIN verification route. Seems like the safer route.

Re: Emission Label for 1971 C10

AAA is the only way

I just transferred title/registration on a K2500 through them last week. Get there 30 mins before they open as they do have a line like DMV...but it is way more organized and moves a LOT faster.
