rack and pinion conversion

ive been playing with the idea of converting my 69 to a rack and pinion and was wondering if i were to go to a parts store to try and purchase one based on a vehicle application what would i be looking for?

i know there are a lot of aftermarket vendors that sell these all over the place but i am thinking a rack from a local parts store would offer a warranty with theirs that i dont think most places, like cpp or otherwise, could/do. that and it would be faster and easier to get my part and fix it if there were to be a problem.

basically since most front end conversions are based on older mustang setups would that be a place to start? or are the aftermarket companies that sell these conversions altering a stock replacement to work on other makes/models?
