Steel wheels for 1971 4x4 truck

Anyone have a source for steel wheels that will fit my truck? I'm going for the old school look and I need 6 lug and Preferably 15 x 8. They are surprisingly hard to find. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Re: Steel wheels for 1971 4x4 truck

I got mine off of a 1978ish pickup that was heading for the crusher for nothing. Keep your eyes open.

Any 4x4 from 1971 through what ever year they went to five lug will work over your disc brake calipers. 1970 and older 6-lug won't clear the caliper. But you probably already know that.

You can have regular 6 lug wheels widened by a Pro .

Re: Steel wheels for 1971 4x4 truck

Look for the four nubs that hold the hubcaps on if you have disc brakes. Three nub wheels won't work on disc's.

Military Blazers had the 15x8 wheels. Military salvage is a good place to look.

Re: Steel wheels for 1971 4x4 truck

Agree with all the good info above, except that I'm not aware of any reproduction 6-lug 15x8 steelies - maybe Cooper Resto started making them since I last looked? I searched high and low when I was looking for a set in 2016, and the closest I got to reproduction wheels was talking with a repro company and asking them if they were interested in creating a new wheel for their line. The answer was no.

Steelies are definitely getting more difficult to find. But there are many of 'em out there if you keep your eyes open. I looked for months and finally ended up getting a set from a board member in the classified section - then had them powdercoated and offset some of the cost by selling my rallyes. After that all happened, I spotted some on a trailer parked on a county road... been sitting there since, if I still needed a set I'd probably go ask if they wanted to sell them.

One of the local tire shops sells a lot of wheels. I go out back and look through the old wheels when I have time.

Re: Steel wheels for 1971 4x4 truck

Wasn't there some sort of back spacing issue with the repro 15x8 6 lug wheels? I thought it was brought up in the cooper thread. Ugh now Im going to have to find it to see if Im all wet or not =)

Re: Steel wheels for 1971 4x4 truck

I stand corrected on the Cooper Resto wheels - looks like they're making some, as shown in the thread CG posted above. Only a month old! Didn't know that had happened.

It's strange they chose to make them 3-nub, even though they supposedly clear the disc brakes like the original 4-nub version. I can see that causing them some customer confusion.

Re: Steel wheels for 1971 4x4 truck

Yes, those three nub repo's will cause a headache somewhere.

We've all been programmed to think, three nub, drum brakes, four nub, disc brakes.

Re: Steel wheels for 1971 4x4 truck

To clear up some confusion on these wheels... We are not the manufacturer of the wheels, just a dealer. The 3 nub feature on the older wheels was only a way to tell the older wheels (drum brake) from the later model disc brake wheels. This doesnt apply to these reproductions. These new reproductions were made to fit both disc or drum brake trucks. There is plenty of room to clear stock type disc brakes. And the half ton caps (10.125") will fit these new wheels with no issues. There are specs for the wheels listed on our website in a varity of widths. These come coated in a powdercoated primer, ready to scuff and paint. Check out www.cooperrestorations.com for the options.

To clarify, you are a dealer for reproduction 15 x 8 steel wheels that clear disc brakes in 71-72 4wd 1/2t GM trucks and take the "dog dish" style 69-72 hub caps? If so, are these USA made?

Correct... we have various widths. All fit disc brakes and the 1/2 ton dog dish caps. They are high quality, made in the USA.

It says they have a powder coated primer finish. I'm not sure what this means, never heard of powder coated primer.

Re: Steel wheels for 1971 4x4 truck

Just read this thread and was curious if anyone has used the Cooper Restoration wheels; I have a 72 K10. The wheels would have to be powder coated so that would an element of cost--I wish they were offered in powder coated white or black. My K10 came from the factory painted black and no hubs so I would opt for black powder coat. Thanks. Martin
