Post swapping to a V8 (same old questions)

Just a couple questions. A customer of mine has a 350, 4 bolt that he is willing to give me. The engine ran 3 years ago when he yanked it out of his truck to drop in a 455. I want to know exactly what has to be replaced when you go to a V8 from an inline. I know that I can drop it right on the inline engine stands, but what else needs to be done to have a succesful install? And, If I was to get the V8 stands and switch to a 4spd, what would need to be done? Thanks for any advice guys.

You can drop it right in on the 250 stands,an HEI dist will fit,but will be tight. On the front, you can run the late, long style waterpump & accessories,& a V8 shroud,or I have heard of guys using a 4 x4 shroud with the short pump. You will need all of the V8 clutch linkage,& use a screw in pivot ball in the foward hole in the block. The frame bracket will need to be moved & frame redrilled (set the bellcrank perpendicular to the block),& the lenght will need to be adjusted on the lower clutch arm. Set up like this, you can run the stock rams horns,or a set of 69090 headmans will fit. To change to a 4spd,you will need a high hump floor section,& the drive shaft lenght will be different(longer). To move to V8 position, you will need to move the bell crossmember......& im not sure that the crossmember is the same (I 6 to V8). You will move foward approx 3 1/2",so there will be drive shaft lenght issues. Good luck....69 longhorn.

I just did part of this rebuild. Stuck a crate 350 into a 72 that had a straight 6. I used Heddman #69092, it is made for the standard tranny. I am looking into the 4-speed change-over next. Good luck

okietruck,I used the 69090s on my swap. Were you mounted in 6 or v8 position? Where i mounted in I6 position, the bellcrank cleared the tubes, but the holes were redrilled in the frame for the bracket. Just curious, there are many ways to do the same job.......69 longhorn.

Thanks for the info. guys. Longhorn, do you happen to have pics from both sides of the engine you could post? I have heard that the distributor sits about 1/8" away from the firewall, and would like to see what yours looks like.

Question

Dubie, what are you going to do with the 250? If it has an HEI I would be interested in the distributor. Thanks

Sorry Dubie,I dont have any good shots that will show the dist. It does fit tight,if the wires are off,I can slide my fingers (tight) between the cap & fire wall, but some of the wires do touch the firewall. As a thought, you could do a little hammer work on the firewall in that area.Good luck.....69 longhorn.

I would be selling the 250, but it doesn't have HEI. It is a stock 250 and the odometer reads 91,000 miles. I'm not sure if those are original or not, but it sure is a good motor. I am going to wait until i get this 350 apart to see what it needs, before I sell off my inline. I may just keep it as a rebuild project, not sure yet.

69 longhorn, I mounted in V8 position and had to get a new bell crank. The I6 bellcrank was too long. The 69092 was recommended where the #7 sparkplug is directly above the engine side ball. I suppose there were some differences over the years. The guys at Jegs said there was a note that the 69090 may have to be "modified" in some manual transmission applications. I put in one the new Goodwrench engines.

okietruck,I was in 6 cyl position, but had v8 linkage. Looking at those 69090s,I could see a problem......the bellcrank would have to go through #7 tube! (in V8 position). I stuck the bellcrank in ahead of the #7& tube,& used a different pivot ball,& redrilled the holes fro the frame bracket.
