It was a good day
I took my nephew for his first deer hunt. After a few range trips he settled in with my scratch built 6.8spc. Three years ago I took a big doe with it at 310 yards so I knew it and my handloads can perform. I got him on a good spot and the deer came through right as expected about 100 yards away. After a brief coaching he squeezed the trigger. She hunched up, tucked tail and ran about 40 yards. That's where she piled into a tree breaking her front left leg and expired. It was about as perfect a shot as you could imagine. Straight into her lungs right behind shoulder blade with no meat damage.
Then it was my turn. We moved to another location and I tried my home built and untested 50 Boewulf. I had nephew wait at east end of tree line while I walked to west end. The plan was for him to push deer towards me after I got settled in. As I was walking I saw my deer about 60 yards away. She was standing with a slight quartering towards me. I instantly stopped walking and raised my rifle. As I put the crosshairs on her I did some quick thought processing. I remembered shooting a doe from same distance with the 6.8, it went clean through with no blood. I didn't want to do that again so I aimed at her shoulder blade and pulled the trigger. The blast from the muzzle brake was very loud in the heavy cover. She hopped up and bolted west like a rocket. I called nephew to come walking over and I waited a few minutes. When he got there we went to check for signs of blood. No problem there. Lots of blood, and tissue. That 300 grain FTX did its job quite well. The trail was very evident in the tall grass. She ran about 30 yards and gave up just across a fence. I'll spare the gory pics, rest assured the damage was extreme. It destroyed the shoulder blade, turned both lungs into jelly and came out other side just ahead of the diaphragm with a 2 1/2" hole. Anyway, here's a pic of us with our deer. His is hanging closer to the camera. Mine is about 40 pounds heavier. I only had one deer hanger in the garage. We stopped at Menards on the way home and bought another.

Re: It was a good day
Love to see the deer kills. This is the third year I'm not able to get into the woods because of my disability. I could get out there, but most likely would end up needing to be carried out. No way could I even think about dragging a deer out

Re: It was a good day
My son got a fair 8 point Saturday afternoon around 4:30. Necked him and he dropped right in the rice bran pile he was eating out of. Deer steaks before Thanksgiving!

Re: It was a good day
Don't give up. A good friend has polio and is confined to a power chair. Our state has public land set aside for handicapped hunts. They can shoot from stationary car/truck or set up a ground blind. He got his 5x5 about noon Saturday
