Intermittent Fuel Low light/Fuel gauge

Ok, here it is. Wifes DD is a 2001 GMC Jimmy. While sitting at a stop light or just parked in the driveway with truck running with over a 1/2 tank of gas the fuel gauge will just drop to E and the fuel light comes on. Has anyone ever expierenced anything like this or have any clues on where I should start to trouble shoot such problem. Thanks for any and all help.

Mike

Re: Intermittent Fuel Low light/Fuel gauge

GM had a problem with the '99-??? sending units on the trucks. The sending unit in the gas tank needs to be replaced. You can buy the unit separately, or with the fuel pump as an assembly. Either way, the sending unit needs to be replaced. My '99 did the exact same thing until I replaced the entire assembly when the fuel pump went out.

Re: Intermittent Fuel Low light/Fuel gauge

My 99 did the same thing as well. When I changed the pump and sending unit together, (the pump was starting to howl intermittently) the problems went away completely. But before changing the unit, I would verify that the ground connection at the frame was good. Otherwise you have to drop the whole tank, and that ain't fun.

Well thanks guys, this gives me somewhere to start. Know of any places to get a decent sending/pump for a decent price, other than the dealer.

I looked online at Autozone, Oreilly's, and Advance Auto Parts. None of them showed the sending unit, only the fuel pump. I would call them up and maybe Napa, and Checker, Wolf, whichever version you have where you are and just ask them. You may be out of luck.

My '00 Silverado did the same thing. I had the fuel pump and sending unit replaced. $850 at the dealership. Luckily, when I bought the vehicle they agreed to fix for free. The salesman got his butt chewed out for that one.

I got mine from Napa. It was a Delphi unit. The same one that the dealership sells. I didn't do this on mine, but I have heard that the taillights can be unplugged, then unbolt the bed & moved back instead of dropping the tank. Its supposed to be easier.
