1972 Extended cab?

I saw this very nice 1972 Cheyenne long bed extended cab at the Daytona Turkey Run over the weekend. I don't recall ever seeing another, and there is no mention in the Chevy brochure. Did Chevy make this or is it a well done modification?

Definitely not factory, as they were never made by GM, but that one looks like it was done very well. The forward slant of the door window makes getting the proportions to look right very difficult.

I sold that back in June to a guy in southern Indiana. I built it back in 1996 and went through it again last year. I thought the guy l sold it to would flip it. Thanks for posting it, been curious where it ended up.

If I'm not mistaken Dodge was the first manufacturer to sell the extra cab to the masses as the Club Cab around 73-74.

First GM extended cab was '88. That's when the truck buying world exploded into today's market. That and the coming of the 4dr SUV, other than Suburban. For GM that was '92. We were the Crewcab people, although Ford and Dodge did it first. Ford dropped that but I believe Dodge carried on. But by the '80s nobody wanted a Dodge until the Cummins saved their butt in '89

This is quite fantastic, both 72 tigger and BLT-NT-BOT. Just think of the gas tank I could put behind the front bench seat! I could drive for days and not stop at a gas station. :-) Seriously, though, great work and beautiful.

Yes. Brand D was the first with factory club cans as they called them back in 1972. They were also the first with factory crew cabs although quite rare with there sweptlines of the 60's.

GM was the first to mainstream the crew cab with the 73-91 model years.

Brand D got back to the crew in 77? It was on hiatus for a few years if I remember right. Type F had them but in very limited numbers from 63 I think it was till they mainstreamed them in the early 80's. Brand D got away from crew cabs in the later 80's. I heard since Ford owned Cummins they could not put them in Crew Cabs per the agreement. Which is weird since Ford went with Internation in 85? Then why not cummins.

I had a 7.3 rclb F250 diesel for a couple months I converted to a short bed, and flipped for a $5000 dollar swing after my divorce. While not anywhere near a Cummins it was decent on power, and excellent on mpg. I have never heard a good reason why type F dropped the ball so bad.

As I understand it, GM lost the CUCV [civilian vehicles for military use] contract to Chrysler because the Air Force required 6-place crew cabs for the Titan Missle program. GM didn't have them at the time the RFP went out.
Any GM crew cabs or extended cabs prior to MY '73 were produced by small custom coach shops for niche buyers like railroads, oilfield exploration companies, municipalities, fire depts. etc.

The windows started out as Dodge Club Cab, but they have been split apart and flattened out (the dodge had curved windows). Also were made a little taller and a little wider. Hope that helps.

I knew it was around then. My dad traded his 70 K20 in for a 74 Dodge W200 Club Cab. The extra cab was a big deal. He was a logger and with the extra cab 4 guys could ride to work together. The back was quite cosy, but it sure saved money when you had a 40-60 mile trip to work every day.
