Protect bare metal during stripping?
Newbie question, so should be an easy one.
Since I get what seems like 5 minutes at a time to work on my truck, I’m stripping very small areas at a time. This could take years or decades until it’s “ready” for proper prime and paint. Do I need to do anything to protect the bare metal from surface rust flashing? I’d really hate to have to start over. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Protect bare metal during stripping?
Do one panel at a time....and be sure to put epoxy primer on it..

Re: Protect bare metal during stripping?
Rust, or oxidation starts molecularly as you strip the surface. Seal ASAP.

Re: Protect bare metal during stripping?
I can't remember what I used but there are spray liquid chemicals that can be applied to preserve for awhile. Someone will know these product names or I will google. What I used lasted very well for about a year and then degraded but still was better than nothing. If your shop gets humid it will visually rust fast.

The above is what I used about 4-5 years ago. The parts are still not painted so I cannot vouch for how primer will adhere what so ever. Please investigate with your own discretion and hopefully a pro here can chime in on their advise. A proper primer would always be best but I too am doing a multi year project that happens to be an old tractor. The parts formed a type of flash rust after a year or two in a uncontrolled environment storage but haven't rusted any further. My thoughts where to lightly sand them again and use a metal prep and hit with epoxy closer to paint time. I may be all wrong in my thinking however. Again, we need a pro on this as I'm curious myself. |

Re: Protect bare metal during stripping?
2K epoxy primer is the only thing to put on bare steel.
I wonder why you are stripping it because there's nothing wrong with painting over existing paint if it's not rusted out... if it rusted out, then there's no point in stripping that area because the repair process will take care of it... Too many guys grind and strip to bare steel needlessly without really knowing why they are doing it aside from what seems like the normal thing to do. If the 60 year old paint is "tightly adhered" and not bubbling or lifting, it's showing proof that it's a good coating so why remove it?

Re: Protect bare metal during stripping?
I’ve used picklex and I also did some test panels about 7-8 years ago, with picklex on bare steel followed by epoxy primer, and picklex followed by bondo, and also polyester primers, , grinded and sanded some off last year, no issues..

Re: Protect bare metal during stripping?
Product called "dry coat". Get it off Amazon in a spray bottle. Just spray it on, let it dry, done. Lasts a year. You will have to clean it first before you paint but your going to do that anyway 😉

Re: Protect bare metal during stripping?
You can get phosphoric acid solution in the paint section at the home store for cheap. Search the internet.
