My new 78 2wd Suburban 454/400

Hi guys,
I am really not new to this forum but I changed car these days and got rid of my 65 C10 350/350 short stepper which was really thrown together.

Now I picked a 78 Burb 454/400 in a really nice condition. It's 99% stock, 2nd owner car with no rust!! Incredible!

Andy, Nuremberg Germany

Nice! How do you find nicer suburbans in Germany than I do here? I also have a 78 454/400 2wd suburban just like yours except for the no rust thing!

It just came over from the states ;-) You don't find good Burbs here. This one is really an exception! Original rocker panels and even under the car - no rust! I've never seen a car like this.

What would you pay for this in the states?

My plan ... To be honest, I keep everything like it is and drive the beauty. I don't think of any modifications yet.

Spectacular find. How many miles are on it? I agree the engine compartment looks wonderful also.

Congratulations.

78K!!! Unbelievable. What were the circumstances for it being shipped to Germany? And gotta ask... what did it cost? I am guessing the "Blue Book" would be only around $1200, but in that condition and with a 454 it probably could have commanded more than $5000. (just my uneducated guess).

Again, Congradulation. And be careful you don't run over any of those little Smart cars in Germany.

You're right. Streets are not as big as they are in the States so I have to be careful especially in the city center! Parking will be a pain but I don't care!

The story around the car is easy. A guy who is importing cars to Germany bought it in somewhere in the States to collect cars with a trailer. He flew over and rented a trailer and bought various cars across the country. He pulled all the cars with the Burb and the trailer to a harbour to ship it to Germany. 6 weeks he was drivin the Burb in the States.

He told me that the Burb was a special order in former days because normally the 2WD Suburbans didn't had the 454. He was also surprised about the condition of the car and before he went back to Germany he also put the Burb into a container to be shipped to Germany.

After it arrived here he used the car as a daily driver for 2 month in Germany. He renewed the undercoating and did a complete body-cavity sealing. He renewed the disc brakes and did a lot of things to keep the condition of the car. Our weather is unfortunately not so good and rust is definitely an issue!

After all that he tried to sell it and only got tons of offers to swap cars but no one was interested to buy it. I just sold my 65 Chevy truck to Austria and was looking for something like this. I went over 400 miles to have a look at it. And went the 400 miles back on the same day! ... After I decided to buy it. It's probably one of the best survivors I've ever seen in Germany. Mostly you get crap cars here or you pay a lot of money. As we have no such cars on our junk yards we have to buy all the parts at special part shops. All comes from overseas and is very expensive because of the shipping and customs. It's a passion to drive a car like this in Germany.

The guy was asking $10.800 for the Burb and I can tell you this is a good deal!! So you probably can imagine why importing US-cars to Germany is still a business over here.

The prices for fuel are so strongly climbing that you would not think that anybody could afford driving such a car over here. We're paying over $2 per liter gas at the moment and it's getting more and more! But the business of driving old American iron is not decreasing at all. Especially muscle cars are the most expensive cars you can buy at the moment.

That's the story.
Sorry for my bad English by the way!
Andy

Re: My new 78 2wd Suburban 454/400

Finally I took it home last weekend. Did 550 Miles with it and I can tell you that it's so extremely smooth driving. Only thing, the 454 is thirsty on the German Highway!

I send you all greetings from overseas. Suburban rules

Great story and a truly great look Suburban. Cheers from America. You would be hard pressed to find one in that original condition here in the States. Great score.
