Question Dana 44 Limits

This is the year [2018] my 65 gets done and I plan to use the full suspension kit that isn't up for sale yet from QA1. Its just going to be easier for me to buy that kit to get what I want out of it to sell my FF Dana 60 and pick up a Dana 44. I found one from a 1966 GMC but what limits does it have and what should be upgraded for 600hp to the tire with a turbo ls engine. Its doubtful it will ever get raced and sticky tires are a maybe but more likely a no too.

The truck will get driven on a daily basis so boost will be low most of the time.

Re: Dana 44 Limits

It might live if the tires aren't too sticky, and pickups are light in the rear anyway.. I don't recall many vehicles with a D44 in the rear besides Jeeps. I'm sure you could blow it pretty easy if you tried. If the QA1 kit doesn't allow for a robust rear axle then it must be for cruising, which is still plenty fun.

Re: Dana 44 Limits

Think there is a reason you don't see many full size trucks with Dana 44s...

Re: Dana 44 Limits

I would build a 12 bolt or a 9" to go in it. The 44 will not stay long. You could put new ends on the dana 60 and put a set of axles in it to get rid of the full floater. My preference from years of drag racing is the 9 inch. Or just get one ready to bolt in. http://www.moserengineering.com/9-muscle-pak.item

Re: Dana 44 Limits

600hp and a Dana44 is not a good combination unless you want to get really good at replacing R&P's. I split a carrier in half in my CJ5 with a SBC that made maybe 300hp. Keep the 60 or go 9".

Re: Dana 44 Limits

IH used Dana 44 rears in their 1/2 tons, but even a light 3/4 ton 2WD with a 304 got the D60 so that's saying something. It'd probably be hard enough to keep a front 44 together if you tapped into much of that 600 horse off-road, let alone a rear.

Re: Dana 44 Limits

You would be money ahead to just keep the Dana 60, have aftermarket housing ends welded on it and a set of Moser axles. I wouldn't waste my time and money with a Dana 44.

Re: Dana 44 Limits

Keep the 60, the 44 won't last very long with that kind of HP in front of it
