GEN I SBC - Casting & Engine ID? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I could now get to casting number on back of this SBC in "Blue," my '67 Chevy C20. I know it is not the original 327 SBC and was told it was a GEN I 350 SBC. Per http://www.chevyhardcore.com/news/re...sting-numbers/ : 3970010 is a Small Block V8 1969 302, 4 bolt, Camaro Z28! Sounds like it will be rebuilt. Not sure about " HECHO EN MEXICO," made in Mexico? Second picture taken of Engine ID Number/VIN Code: MC06800. Any help better understanding what I have would be appreciated. I'm trying to decide if this engine is work rebuilding or go "crate motor?"

Need to look up the codes in the last pic. that cast number is for 4" bore I believe. Somehow don't think the 302 was "henco in Mexico'

Been networking with Friends on FB too. And found that MC: M - GM of Mexico & C - Chevrolet passenger car.

Engine Block Codes for CID 350
Casting Years CID HP Main Notes
3970010 1970-80 350 145-350 2/4 Truck/Passenger/Chevelle/Chevy II/Corvette/Camaro

Guess I will need to wait until I yank this engine out of frame and start pulling it apart to confirm more.

Anything more definitive will come from engine breakdown, I guess. Looks to be a bit disappointing for moving my 3/4 ton C20?

Likely an old target master motor from gm. Usually a 4 bolt main 350 with a stock cam, 8.5 to 1 compression and poor heads.

If you pull a valve cove, run the number on the head. Who knows? Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll be decent. Some Mexican Targetmaster motors came with the more desirable heavy castings.

The 3970010 block is one of the most produced 350 blocks there is. Relatively few had a crank other than a 3.48" to make it a 350. The 'Hencho En Mexico" and the remnants of the corporate blue paint is a strong indication of a '80's vintage 350 Targetmaster engine.
