First year for K Custom Camper inquiry! (the proverbial needle in a haystack search)

Been trying to sort out whether or not one could purchase a Z81 RPO on a 67 K20.

In the GM Vehicle Information Kit for 67 (pic 1), there is a only a scribbled note for the Custom Camper nameplate, but in the 68 VIK (pic 2), it's formally listed in the text. Since these VIKs produced by GM are somewhat "official" - not sure how valid a hand-written note that got reproduced into the .pdfs in the computer age is... SO, I have indeed seen 68 K20 Custom Campers before (as expected per the 68 VIK (pic 3)), but have never seen a verified 67 K20 Custom Camper.

In 65-66 Z81 was definitely only available on the C's, no K's came from the factory with Z81 in those years, however, what I'm really trying to nail down is what the first your for the Custom Camper RPO was on a K(10 or 20). 67 or 68? So, show me your 67 K20 Custom Camper and prove that the VIK scribbled note was correct (and make my day)!

I'm not sure if I've seen a '67 K-model Custom Camper or not. I have some of those dealer books and have found info contrary to what I've seen on actual trucks.

Re: First year for K Custom Camper inquiry! (the proverbial needle in a haystack sea

I haven't seen one yet Tim. I hang out on the 60-66 side of the house sometimes also (don't tell anyone) and this was a major topic of discussion when a faked 66 K20 Custom Camper came up on ebay for a cool $30+K (if I recall). Was a beautiful truck, but the seller swore it was absolutely an original 66 K20 custom camper. Even though the emblem was painted red, and there was no SPID (it was a 66, first SPID year) or build sheet... Anyway, we kinda proved to ourselves that there was no such animal supported by any factory documentation in the 65-66 era, only Cs could order RPO Z81. And, of course, in the 67-72 era, the only piece of info I've ever seen floating around regarding when the Custom Camper started in K's is the scribbled note in the 67 VIK (if it weren't for that note, I'd have to assume it started in 68). I also noted that in 67, the "Custom Camper" optional equipment was placed in the alphabetical order as "Nameplate, Custom Camper" (in other words, it IS present in the C10/C20 section of the 67 VIK), but the K10 and K20 sections, which are separate, only yielded the above scribbly note in the K20 optional equipment section. In 68, the option was filed alphabetically under the letter C for Custom Camper, not N for Nameplate. Anyway, trivial trivia, to say the least. The search continues for a documented 67 K10/20.. Personally, I do not expect to find one, I'm going to guess 68 is the first year - but I'd love to know if a 67 example is out there.

Me too. I've had some rare Custom Camper 4wds and that's one I'd sure like to have...if it exists.
