Just to put paint costs you have into a little better light.

Here is a little odd "come on now" for you. The next time we complain about parts or material prices or something, check out this little one. This is a photo of a toner used in a color on a new Dodge truck we just painted at the shop. The toner you see in the photo is 250 ml or about 8.5 oz. It costs $167! Now, this isn't the real kicker to the story. The smallest you mix you can make of the pearl white color on this truck is 12 oz and it takes about 6.5 oz of this one toner to make that 12 oz! So, to make color matching test panels each one takes almost this whole $167 bottle! If this was a small job like just one fender this would be CRAZY as you couldn't use those test mixes for anything after you found the color you are going to shoot.

In this case it worked out because it was getting a bed side and cab corner and door so the test mixes were used as a base for the final paint. But it took EIGHT of these $167 bottles to paint JUST those few panels on the truck. So it took over $1300 for JUST this one toner for the paint on this truck!

That's not clear, primer, nothing, just this one toner to paint a bed side, cab corner and rear door.

Is this used because you are trying to match paint? I cant imagine that is the cost the factory is paying to shoot the truck.

I'm sorry, but that's insane $.

Yet another reason NOT to buy anything newer than the mid-'70's.

Re: Just to put paint costs you have into a little better light.

Brian, that is crazy. I am curious what color the Dodge is?
I was looking at some greens and found some of the crazy factory colors are super high on those as well.
Thanks
Dave

Re: Just to put paint costs you have into a little better light.

It's a 2018 Dodge Ram, paint code PWQ. And by the way, this was PPG, another paint brand may have way different prices on this particular color and not use a toner like this, they can be very different from one another.
