tires....

my tires rub so i need some lower profile tires, my rim is 15x9 the guy at the tire store said i couldnt get under a 255 for that rim, would a 255 work on the 15x9? and how much smaller is a 255 then a 275? thanks

It will work, but I would not go any smaller then that..

a 255 is 255mm wide, a 275 is 275mm wide. so the difference in width is less than an inch. the aspec ratio,( or the second set of numbers in the tire size) like 40, 50, 60 series..etc. is what determines the height. a 255 will work on a 9" rim, but its pushing it.
