Pulled Motor to finish firewall...What should I go through on the motor???
Hey Guys...
As some of you know, I was going to pull my motor/tranny to finish shaving the firewall...Here is my question. The 93 HO 350 Crate motor has about 30K as does the TH350 trans. What should I do to the motor since I am going to paint it (I am going body color HoK Tangelo Pearl)? I had planned on valve cover gaskets, timing chain cover gasket, pan gasket, front and rear main seals and intake & exhaust gaskets. Should I pull the heads and replace those gaskets? Would it be a good idea to do a new timing chain since I'm pulling the cover anyways? What else should I do since it is out? Also, it has been over 20 years since I rebuilt a small block (built well over 50 VW engines). What are the best gaskets out there (I know this is open to preference), Fel Pro, Mr Gasket? One last question. The truck will not be a daily driver, but I definitely want reliability, should I put a more aggressive cam in it? I'm not sure what grind it has in it now, I could find out I guess. I'd like it to thump but still perform and be reliable. Mike EDIT: Here are the specs on what it has now Camshaft lift (in): .435 intake / .460 exhaust Camshaft duration (@.050 in): 212'c1 intake / 222'c1 exhaust |

If it is not leaking anywhere, just clean up and paint. With just 30,000 miles it is just getting started in it's life. As to trans put front and rear seals and change filter. These engines are good for 200,000 or more if taken care of. As to the cam, call tech at one of the cam companies and tell them your set and what you want it to do. They put you on the right cam.

Throw in some brass freeze plugs while it’s out. I would leave the gasket and seals alone if they’re not leaking, new gaskets won’t necessarily last any longer the ones you already have.
If you're going to a bigger cam then you may need more intake and some head work to help it along, then if you go to the trouble might as well get a stall converter.....its just wont end till you build a complete new drive train. Its an addiction that has no cure, get out while you still have your sanity
