Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!

The thing back then was how to build them to last. That's what these big-gas motors come out of. Look at the gas motors GMC was making back then, on through to the V6s. Some serious iron, true truck engines

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!

I don't know why GMC didn't lend out some of it's engines to Chevy back then.

That 503-6 was pretty cool and powerful to boot.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!

In the 50's, Chevy and GMC really didn't compete with each other outside of light duty and medium duty up to about 2.5T. GMC's were more expensive, and Chevy really didn't offer any heavy duty trucks aside from a few medium duty gasoline tandems. Even in the 60's Chevys had 53 series Detroits and Toroflows, but no 71 series diesels. That changed in 1970 when GM rebadged all the heavy duty GMC's and franchised Chevy dealers to sell them.

Some heavier series Chevy's did use the GMC V6 and GMC toroflow diesel, specs from a 1969 brochure.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!

Right, later on in time they finally did.

But they should have started much earlier in the 50's.

Although you could get a 4-53 Detroit in a Chevy in the later part of the '60-'66 Mediums but yet not in a GMC. That was one example that was backwards, lol.

I agree, GMC's pretty much concentrated on building straight sixes in the 50's, GMC 270's were pretty close in performance to Chevy 261, but the GMC 302 would have been a nice deal in a Chevy.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!

Like Bob B correctly mentioned, Chevy didn't even offer a truck line large enough in the 50's that could handle the size of a big GMC straight six.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!

I showed the 503 to emphasis that GMC had real truck engines and that was the top dog 6. But they did make great smaller engines that would have served the Chevys well had they used them. More cubes as well as "truck-built" design. Such as the 270

The 420 just has the lowest 1st gear ratio (ever) at 7.05:1
