No, I'll be on my own, even the dog wasn't impressed with the idea of 10 hours + in the car. I'll be doing a detour via Norfolk to pick up a C10 grill and headlights on the way down

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

Drove down on Thursday to see Martin and pick up his straight six engine for mine. Should have been a nice 5 hour journey, got stuck behind several breakdowns and crashes on the motor, ended up 8 hours to get there. Loaded up the engine in the trailer, had a brew and got the guided tour of Martins truck. I reackon He'll have it on the road for summer.
Rian nowhere to be seen ? Apparently he said something about going home to dye his beard and do his nails, I'm sure Martin said something like that, lol. Anyway set off home at about 10 pm, got round the corner went over a speed bump, engine fell over and split the oil filter (Oops). Reloaded it more securely and got home about 2:30am. Unloaded the engine and box.
On route to Martin's yesterday i did a 100 mile detour to collect a C10 Grill, come with a free alloy Grill, the chrome one is beat up but for free i was having it, even if it ends up as garage wall art. Also more gifts arrived via the postman, a nice new twin brake master cylinder.

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

strapped on the inlet, exhaust manifold and carb off Martin's (mjh1965) engine. Swapped over the dizzy too as the new (to me) one is electronic and the old one was points and condensors which was all seized up.

Set the timing to approx 4deg BTC, although it took me a while to figure out the datum point on the harmonic balancer was wrong because it has spun slightly. So made a new datum and set the timing roughly. had a can of fresh petrol strapped up to the fuel pump. Cranked it over a few times with the coil disconnected to get oil pressure up and fuel into the carb. Connected the coil, cranked it over again and fired write up. Although no exhaust on and the throttle jammed wide open, so think gave everyone in the neighborhood and myself a shock.

Add a return spring to the carb and rigged up a mechanical oil pressure gauge, run again and reading 40 PSI on a fast tickover.

Next steps to hook up the radiator, check valve timing, change the oil, make a side exit exhaust with silencer and run again. Then I need to think up a solution to the missing propshaft.

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

Was just browsing your thread and noticed your brake shoes are swapped back to front incorrectly. My understanding, though there seems to be some debate, is that the brake shoe with the larger/longer friction surface goes toward the rear of the vehicle. My father-in-law was GM factory trained and insists that's the proper way. Might read up on that and decide for yourself

I'm impressed with what you can do without having parts at your fingertips. I get impatient just having to wait for parts to come the next day from 100 miles away.

Impressive progress Andy.

I guess you had one of those speed crazed Meerkat grins on your face when the motor fired up.

Well done.

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

thanks the comments re brake shoes, I'll check that out when I rebuild them. I would love to have Chevy parts just 100 miles away. That would be heaven! In one one it will make it a true hot rod and hybrid. I need to get the truck together as standard to get the UK MOT test complete and then UK registration. Once I've done this it might have either a V8 fitted or turbo the existing inline 6 motor.

To be honest when the throttle jammed wide open I nearly shat my pants as I was inside the cab and as I had hard wired the coil straight to the battery, I had to jump out the cab and run round and pull the wires off the battery. with no exhaust fitted my mate who has a chevy caprice police car and is 1 street away came round shortly after, he said he was in his kitchen and it sounded like a Lancaster bomber had flown over his house at low altitude

On reflection with a brew in my hand it was more like 'Rabbit caught in headlights' look on my face when I realized turning the ignition key did not kill the motor

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

Nice day on Sunday, so got a little more done. Put it's face on but still no eyes.

had the generator missing, so found a brand new one on ebay for a ford fiesta just 2 miles away for £10. So thought I'd give that a go. Bit of good old fashioned ingenuity of bracket engineering ( ie using what i had lying about) and it was soon in place. Moving the tensioning bracket to the lower water pump mounting bolt got the tension back into the correct arc for adjustment. Now need to order a lucas 3 pin type plug and work out how to convert from dynamo to generator.

Wanted to run the engine but had no spare rad hoses, so looked to borrow off my Galaxie, as that's sat at the side of the garage feeling sorry for itself.

tada , ready made parts bin

Meanwhile over in the front garden eldest daughter decided she wants to repaint the tot rod and add flames

Sun going down, semi arty shot

I have a video to add of engine running and this time with a silencer added, but its taking ages to upload.

Also decided to go full air ride front and rear, so picked up this 2nd hand kit off ebay. Bags will need swapping out but worth it for the control valves, compressor and remote switching

Hopefully if it's not raining tomorrow will be a truck day ..............yippee!

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

Had a long list of jobs rattling around in my head, so decided to write them down. I've written the list in a special code that only I can understand.......Well thats a lie even i cant read it today.

My mum says bad handwriting is the sign of either a good Engineer or Doctor, I'm no doctor, unless of course I start calling myself the Rust Doctor. So I must be a great engineer.... or more likely just have terrible handwriting.

I expect the list to shrink and grow a little, but hopefully more shrinking than growing.

Andy, I didn't think it possible but I do believe your hand writing is worse than mine, I bet your spelling isn't though

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

Fitted the new window and door handles However on the drivers side the splines were completely shot, luckily I found this under the seat. I'm guessing the PO must have bought these to replace.

first shiney bits on the truck and maybe the first things that actually work

New ignition switch and start button, 2nd thing to work

It can also see now it has eyes

next to sort out hornets nest of wiring and fit a fuse box

Nice to see progress being made. It sort of reminds me building my 55 Belair when I lived in northern Japan. I had a conglomeration of parts under the hood that came from every know Japaneses and old US military vehicle you could think of.
