Re: 1966 Chevelle Build

Last week I took my hood down to get the bottom side media blasted at the local powder coater. At some point some one had sprayed textured under body coating on the bottom side of the hood, it looked nasty. When I pick up the hood the guy said they blasted both sides by mistake and since the top side was in primer they premiered powder coated (I never knew there was such a thing) the whole hood at no charge. I took it to my painter and he took one look at and was rather happy since all he has to do on the bottom side is scuff it up before he paints. As I was at the painters I took a look at what he's done so far. Most of the car was down to bare metal. The body was in not too bad of shape. Under the primer that was on the car was the original red, so it's never been painted before beyond the factory paint.

Never heard of that before this week I was talking to a custom wheel shop and he mentioned painting over the powdercoating and he said its a great primer. I thought to myself "some research needed before I buy into that".
Funny that your guy kind of saying the same thing.

Loving the build!

When I first seen the hood I though, man I wished they hadn't done that, knowing the primer is the foundation of a good paint job and not knowing what they sprayed on the hood. I thought maybe they got a cheap rattle can of primer and sprayed it. But now I know. I guess your never to old to learn something new.

Just a few small pin holes, but not bad at all.

A few years ago Hot Rod Magazine built the F-Bomb Camaro and they powdercoated the whole car and then did all the body work over the powder coat.

I can see how they could use plastic filler over to top, this stuff is tuff.

Yep, it's turned out there's very little rust. I did find the hood was really wavy so that gives me a reason now to buy a steel cowl hood.

Re: 1966 Chevelle Build

I got some bad news on the Chevelle today. It turns out that the guy I bought it from had so call molded in the drip rails. I knew there was a lot of plastic filler and I wanted to have the drip rail back, so I had my paint guy grind out all of the filler. Well now for the bad news, rot, lot of rot all along the drip rail and above, also back in the roof suport on both sides. The only good news is I found a replacmnet roof for $195. So next weekend I'm headed to San Jose to pick it up.

Re: 1966 Chevelle Build

So the dude that had it before decided instead of repairing the rust the correct way, he would just fill in the eaten away metal with filler and "mold in" the drip rails at the same time?!

That's a good price on the roof though. Maybe I can pick it up for you on Monday? I am flying into San Jose at about 5 oclock. Still trying to think if it would fit in my tiny bed though....

Beautiful car my friend. The good thing about finding/addressing these types of issues (drip rails) is that you start to eliminate the unknowns. It seems like you are making good decisions with this build, and you will really able to appreciate the finished product!
I cant wait to see it! Following this build for sure!

Re: 1966 Chevelle Build

My Dad's favorite car is a 67 Chevelle, not much different. I hope to buy one when I retire from the Marines so we can build one together. I am already working on a father/son project with my boy. My wife wants a blazer so that will be "our" project. The thing I like the most about this hobby is that can involve the whole family. Good to see another spouse in the garage to help out!!

That's what I like about these old Chevelle's 66 to 70 each year were differant but yet some are simmilar. Now days a model can look the same for years. Look at the 1973 to 87 Chevy trucks, really only a few sligtht changes.

Re: 1966 Chevelle Build

I have been working on the center console. For those of you familiar with the 66 67 center consoles you know that GM added a clock on to the console. I always thought they should have had a tach there not a clock. So being the guy that dose thing my way and thinking it should have been a tach, I put a Auto Meter tach in.
