Re: 89 GMC truck motor swap

First- is your 89 GMC 2wd or 4x4? A 1500, 2500 or 3500? Does it have a 5 sod or automatic trans? Was the original engine a 4.3/5.0 or 5.7?
A 283 has the same bell housing pattern as any small/ big block Chevy engine so bolting to trans won't be a problem but if a 5 sp you will need a 283 flywheel for 11" clutch.
62 and newer 283's have side motor mounts but before that they did not have the bolt boss patern for that. To run the accessory brackets you will need 283 heads with the bolt pattern in them. Also will need the newer long water pump and pulleys to run them. I use an 8" 350 timing cover and 8" balancer.
When you say "keep the wiring" are you referring to the gauge wiring or keeping the tbi system?
283"'s are not very torque happy so to me a 5 spd or 4L60 would be best
