305EV6 manual to Auto Swap, HELP!

Ok fellas, I am working on a major restoration on my late brothers truck and I need some major help from guys who are experienced with these trucks. Feel free to Read the story and see restoration pics at www.jakesgeneralstore.com scroll down to 68 GMC Lost now found.

It is a 1968 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4, 305EV6 4 sp, manual steering and Brakes. I want to keep the 305EV6 motor and convert the truck to an auto and put power steering and brakes in it. I know the easy solution for the auto trans would be to dump the V6 for a more common motor but this motor in my opinion is what makes this truck so cool. Does anyone know what auto trans will bolt up to this V6 Block? I need to hook up with some V6 People. I have had one suggestion of a guy making an adapter plate, which is our plan now but I am not pleased about it.

I also want to ad power steering but I am hitting road blocks there. I am told they did have power steering in a 68 4x4. I need a stuff to convert. I have tried aftermarket and they only make kits for 69 4x4 and up and 67-68 2wd

I would appreciate anyone's help with this project. We have started to put the auto colum and auto pedals in. I just dont want to go back to the 4 spd..
Thanks
Jake

I don't know for sure, but at one point GMC used Pontiac V8 engines in their pickups. I would check an early Pontiac auto tranny to see if it has the same bellhousing pattern as the V6.

This site is mostly for 60-66 gmc's but MAN do they have a wealth of info on the v6's

http://www.6066gmctrucks.org

Check out the link to 'transmissions' the mention some of the autos used behind these engines in the 60-66 years and the special adapters and other considerations.
