Which Transmission for my me??
Hey all......got a TH350....I'm pretty sure.....that I want to replace....its leaks like crazy....plus its done shifting at about 40mph......from there on out its all rpms and thats not driver friendly to me......I live in an urbanish area......
What I want is a low rpm at 65mph tranny.....so is it a 700r4 or a th400 or a 4l60......I don't want to carve out or bang out my tranny tunnel.....I've got a 400 engine and just want a bolt in tranny that is not all computerized or costing me extra bucks to do this and that.....what do you think is best for me? My truck is not all straight and beautiful....its a driver and I like functionality and reliability. Thanks. |

Re: Which Transmission for my me??
A th400 will not gain you anything except the cost of a new granny as both 3rd and final gears are 1:1. So that won't be a no go.a 4l60E is a good overdrive transmission but will require a stand alone controller which means more cost. A 700r4 is also a overdrive transmission but more mechanical requiring a TV cable which can be tricky but is vital to transmission life. That one gets my vote because it is a happy medium For what ya need.

Agreed!
Just be absolutely certain that you setup the TV cable correctly. There are many, many, many threads in this section all about the 700R4. Quote:

TH350 2wd? 2004R bolts in with no drive shaft mods, just need to add TV cable and TCC wire with switch.
Otherwise, what they said.

Re: Which Transmission for my me??
A SBC 400 puts out a lot of torque. A 200-4R, 700R4/4L60 will need some slight upgrades to live a happy life.

Re: Which Transmission for my me??
What rear end gears do you have? Might be able to get an improvement in cruise RPMs with a gear change. Especially if you don't due much heavy hauling or towing. That 400 should have plenty of torque to get a mostly empty truck moving. Might be a lower cost solution then a new transmission.
Your leaking Th350 might just need a set of seals. |
