Sport Trac rotors on MII?

I've been looking into MII suspensions.

Seems like the Granada rotor and GM calipers are the main stay.

When it comes to brake upgrades, Wilwood seems to have the market cornered. CPP has some upgrades too, but all are very pricey.

The 2wd Explorer Sport-Trac uses 12 rotors. Hub ID is 1.78 and 2.5625, just like the MII

So, it may fit.

Anyone ever tried? Is it even worthwhile going from 11" to 12"?

I know some modifications would need to be made to the caliper bracket, seems like it would be worthwhile off hand.

I know the aviators come stock with 13" rotors

Re: Sport Trac rotors on MII?

The Lincoln Aviator rotors are hat type for an AWD vehicle.

I was looking more into the 2WD setup that had the hub and rotor as one assembly.

From my research, the 87-93 Mustang along with Explorer and Rangers, have a shorter spindle than the MII. While they are minimally shorter, it may be enough that this whole idea won't work.

The problem seems to come in the area where the spindle necks down for the outer bearing. Some of the MII spindles may have enough area, some may need some machining.

It's hard to tell without having them in my hand.

I doubt the sport trac rotors are different from the explore 2wd or 2wd ranger

They do require a hub from earlier Mustangs.

Might be able to get one thrown into the MII kit.

Re: Sport Trac rotors on MII?

The 12.5 kit might be up my alley. I'm pretty sure the 13 won't fit into a 16" rim.

I'm all about being serviceable in the future.

Not to mention price. I don't see any good reason to buy a Wilwood or Baer kit for $1500- $2000, unless I'm driving a race car.

Re: Sport Trac rotors on MII?

Yeah 13 inch rotors you need 17s to clear depending backspace,The 12.5 might fit a 16 inch rim and again depending backspacing. The cobra brakes he had are pbr calipers which are used on some mustang and corvettes,And baer uses the same pbr calipers on their smaller 2 piston kits.Only other kit i know of is cpp aka classic performance parts theirs is a 13 inch 2 piston set up but starts a little under a grand.

Re: Sport Trac rotors on MII?

Newer Vans and Silverado have 13" rotors and Calipers in 16" rims, but the rotor hat is deeper. They have larger calipers too. I'll cross my fingers.

Re: Sport Trac rotors on MII?

I traded my cousin some parts for an Explorer rear.

The 11" discs should be sufficient. It's pretty common to upgrade to Cobra rear discs, but I don't see the point.

Re: Sport Trac rotors on MII?

The cobra rear brakes are 11 inches but i think the piston in the caliper is a tiny bit bigger but not worth the swap to me either. If your looking at over 350hp i would fully weld the axle tubes to the center on that 8.8,If your under that i would let it be.The great thing about the 8.8 the aftermarket is huge on it so anything you want is out there.

Re: Sport Trac rotors on MII?

My 09 F150 has an 8.8, it has a 5700 lb curb weight. I figure that's stout enough.

The Cobra rear discs are vented, the Explorer are just a solid disc. I don't think it's a real big issue. If heat is a problem, I'll get some slotted/drilled rotors.

54 AD 3/4 ton truck.

My goal is to have a reliable driver. I would like to be able to use it as a truck too.

Since it's a 3/4 ton and a little larger than the 3100 trucks, I'm wanting it built a little more solid.

Re: Sport Trac rotors on MII?

Re: Sport Trac rotors on MII?

I'll be honest with you. I don't really like S10 swaps.

I think the original frame on the 3600 truck is a better building platform than the S10. It is made of 3/16 steel and already has the correct mounts & dimensions.

I have looked into Trailblazer swaps and most recently, Explorer chassis swaps.

For the work involved and money-wise, the OE frame with IFS always seems to be the winner.
