Rebuilding original 1939 Gauges

I'm slowly working on rebuilding the factory gauges in my dad's '39 Chevy truck. We will be running a 12 volt system, a newer fuel tank/sending unit, and a V8. So none of the factory gauges will work.
Besides sending them off to be reworked, what are my options?

Right now I'm leaning towards buying cheap aftermarket gauges, and modifying the factory housing to make them fit.

Then for gauge faces, I'm thinking I could scan the gauge face into the computer, and have my friend cut out a new set of numbers out of vinyl sticker material. I'd then paint the original face a solid color, and lay the sticker over the top.
Second option is to again scan the faces into the computer, but instead of using vinyl sticker material, have new faces laser cut out of steel or stainless steel, backed by another piece of painted steel to make the numbers stand out.
Opinions? Other thoughts?

You can get new guage face decals from numerous vendor's, also the fuel guage is the only guage that will have a problem with 12v instead of 6v and you can get a resistor to step down the voltage and still be able to use it.

Also if you have an orig. heater you will need a resistor for it also, the heater motor can't take the 12v pwr.

You will also need to change the voltage requlator,generator, and all the bulbs to 12 volt also. There is a how to convert fm 6v to 12v on the stovebolt page in the Tech section.
